About this video
Transitioning to the lapel guard from various guards such as X-Guard, Single Leg X-Guard, Mantis, De La Riva, and Spider Guard is the focus. Once in lapel guard, the goal is to move to X-Guard as a setup for a sweep or submission.
- Start by kicking the bottom leg upwards to transfer the foot to the opponent's belt, enabling a spin into X-Guard.
- Place a hand near the opponent's knee and maintain a tight grip, keeping the ear close to the shoulder to prevent the opponent from escaping.
- Pretend to initiate a sweep from X-Guard to create an opening for the submission.
- While pushing to sweep, sit up and use the left arm to help bend the opponent's knee, positioning their foot for the submission.
- Follow the opponent's movements, keeping the belly squeezed tight and locking in the submission hold.
- If the opponent attempts to roll, maintain control and continue the movement to secure the submission from either direction.
- Before releasing the grip on the opponent's leg, ensure to catch their foot to prevent them from kicking free.
- Bend the opponent's foot onto the belly, adjust the lock, and apply the submission with a tight squeeze of the belly.
This technique uses the element of surprise and the opponent's anticipation of a sweep to set up a submission from the lapel guard.
