About this video
Transitioning from a failed De La Riva pass to a toe hold or footlock:
- Use a C-grip to maneuver the opponent's ankle and attempt to stuff their leg under your neck.
- Step back with your opposite leg to create an angle on their knee, which can lead to a leg drag pass.
- Alternatively, you can use the leg drag to set up a toe hold by stepping back and driving their leg across your belly.
- Secure the toe hold by wrapping your arm around their leg and locking in the grip.
- When the opponent pushes with their De La Riva hook, take advantage of the momentum to control the leg with both hands.
- Step back to place their leg in the correct position for the submission.
- Step forward to tighten the wrap on the leg and lock the toe hold, maintaining pressure.
- If there's an opportunity, kick the free leg out and bring it over the opponent's body, then sit back to finalize the lock.
This sequence offers a strategic option to counter the De La Riva guard, turning a guard pass attempt into a submission opportunity.
