About this video

Executing a half guard pass to back take involves a series of strategic grips and movements:

  1. Start in the half guard position and switch grips to prepare for the pass.
  2. Change the hand positioning and apply a slight raise of the leg to initiate the pass.
  3. As you begin to cut your knee across to pass the guard, be prepared for the opponent to bridge in an attempt to escape.
  4. When the opponent bridges, pass your right leg over their body while keeping your left hook inside.
  5. Bring the opponent to the opposite side to start taking their back.
  6. Connect your hands together and change your grip before moving your head to the other side, forcing the opponent to look away.
  7. Shake and slide your knee to create movement and space.
  8. As the opponent bridges, step your right leg over and maintain your left hook inside.
  9. Transition your hand to the front of the opponent's chest to bring them onto their side.
  10. Insert your second hook to secure the back position.
  11. Finally, switch your grips to a seatbelt hold to stabilize and control the back.
