About this video

Passing the De La Riva guard to set up a North-South choke involves the following steps:

  1. When the opponent plays De La Riva guard and wraps their arm inside your leg, control their leg to prevent them from moving their foot.
  2. Place your left hand on their arm to block it and step your left foot back to initiate the pass.
  3. Slide your foot under their leg to disrupt their De La Riva hook, making it difficult for them to move their right foot.
  4. Drop your weight down to control their leg, anticipating that the opponent will react by trying to pull your leg.
  5. As the opponent reacts, pass your arm over their body, placing your weight on them.
  6. Use your left arm to block their leg and then jump to the side, forcing the opponent to look away with your body on top of them.
  7. Move your foot to the opposite side and pass your arm over their shoulder.
  8. Join your hands together and drop your chest down, placing your right shoulder low to secure the North-South choke position.
