About this video
Counter the smash pass when the opponent weaves one arm through and cups the leg:
- Sit up to the left elbow and use a knuckle-forward hand position to dig under the opponent's armpit, preventing finger injuries.
- Place the right hand deep inside the thigh, ensuring the arm and leg are fully connected, not on the shin or top of the leg.
- Fall to the shoulder while extending the leg and pulling the opponent's arm up to secure an overhook.
- As you fall, use the left hand to cup the opponent's bicep to prevent them from hugging the head and smashing.
- Assume the opponent will place their knee to beat your knee to prevent you from closing the guard.
- If the opponent does not beat your knee, you can potentially bring your knee out and close the guard to attack.
- With the opponent's knee beating yours, cup their bicep to maintain head control and prevent them from flattening you out.
- Place the right foot inside to establish a butterfly hook while maintaining the half guard with the other leg.
- Keep the right arm in an overhook position and the left arm framing on the bicep to control the opponent's posture and arm.
This sequence transitions you from a defensive position into a butterfly half guard with an overhook and bicep control, setting up potential attacks or sweeps.
