About this video

Utilizing the underhook from half guard is crucial for setting up attacks. The knee shield is instrumental in achieving the underhook by allowing you to push and pull your opponent, creating the necessary momentum.
  1. Start with a strong knee shield to manage the distance and timing for the underhook.
  2. Shoot your leg straight to bring your opponent's weight forward, facilitating the underhook.
  3. As you obtain the underhook, straighten your leg and follow with your hand under your leg, coming up to your elbow.
  4. Keep your head tight to your opponent's chest to prevent them from framing and re-underhooking.
  5. Immediately scoot out to improve your angle, using your foot to adjust your hips while keeping your trapped leg over your opponent's.
  6. Post your elbow behind you to maintain an upright position, preventing your back from being flattened.
  7. Before coming up to your knees, use your outside foot to rake your opponent's leg towards your butt, breaking their base.
  8. Ensure to control your opponent's leg at all times, either by pinching or keeping your leg under theirs.
  9. Lift your hips and remove your inside knee from underneath your opponent, sliding it under their knee to enter the dogfight position.
  10. When coming up, avoid moving into your opponent's space; instead, lift your hips and position yourself behind them.
  11. Ensure your underhook is deep, reaching for the far lat muscle, and keep your head tight to their body.
This sequence leads to a strong dogfight position with good control over your opponent's leg, setting you up for further attacks or transitions.
