About this video
Counter the smash pass with a knee lever from the butterfly half guard:
- Start with the same setup, entering into the butterfly half guard and placing your hand on the opponent's hip.
- Feel the opponent driving forward, attempting to flatten your butterfly hook.
- Use the leg that is not the butterfly hook to elevate, but if the opponent's weight is driving back, making it hard to elevate, prepare to switch strategies.
- Turn the knee of the leg controlling the half guard outward, placing the foot on the floor to trap the opponent's leg.
- Use the left knee to turn into the opponent, performing a dummy sweep to off-balance them.
- This movement can also set up a butterfly sweep. Attempt the dummy sweep and switch to the butterfly sweep as needed, or vice versa.
- The goal is to come up into the best position possible, ideally shooting your knee across the opponent's leg to end up in the mount.
- Combine these movements in a chain, reacting to the opponent's counters, and continue chaining attacks until one is successful.
- Establish an overhook, frame against the opponent's arm, and place your butterfly hook. Push your hand into their hip and feel their backward pressure.
- Trap with the left leg and move the left knee to the side, then immediately come up on top into the mount position.
