About this video

When your partner manages to get into a single leg X or ashi garami position, there are several steps to follow:

  1. Prevent your partner from controlling your second leg. If they do, they can easily knock you down to the mat. If they manage to get a hold of your second leg, pummel your toes out through the space between their elbow and ribs.
  2. Once you've freed your second leg, avoid putting too much weight on the leg your partner is attacking. If you do, they can easily knock you off balance. Instead, keep your weight more towards the side of your free leg.
  3. Prevent your partner from reaping your leg and exposing your heel. To do this, keep your foot on the mat and use both hands to control their leg. One hand should have the thumb in, and the other hand should have the thumb on the outside.
  4. Once you've secured control of their leg, clear their foot off your hip. This will cause their hips to drop. Then, grip your partner's shin with your thumb and put all your weight on your hand. This will kill their hook.
  5. When stepping out of the single leg X position, push your partner's foot down with your right hand and step straight up, not out. Then, step your foot all the way to your partner's hip, place your hand on the mat, and switch your hips to a reverse neon belly position.
  6. From the reverse neon belly position, pass your leg inside and sit through. Now, you're in a top side saddle position and ready to attack.
