About this video

The Pummel Pass or Knee Hike is a technique that can be used when you're having trouble advancing due to your opponent's effective framing and leg extension. This move isn't high percentage, but it's low risk as you can easily revert to your previous position if it fails.

  1. When your opponent is pushing in and creating space, rock back onto your feet by pushing off your hand.
  2. Keep your knees relatively close together and bring both hands to your opponent's knee.
  3. Kick through and shift your hips to the side, placing your hamstring in front of your opponent's knee.
  4. If your opponent tries to bring their knee back, they'll be in an awkward position and will likely turn towards you.
  5. When they turn, hug their back. This move is particularly effective when your opponent is pushing away and making it difficult for you to advance.
  6. If you miss the knee hike pass, you can easily revert to your previous position and try again or go back into your pass sitting without missing a beat.
  7. When you hit the knee hike pass, thrust your hips forward and move to the side, ending up with your hamstring in front of your opponent's knee.
  8. If your opponent doesn't react, settle into a three-quarter mount. If they turn back into you, hug their back with one hand and bring the other to their head to prepare for a knee cut pass and establish side control.
