About this video

Transitioning from an outside Ashi Garami to a Twister Hook:

  1. When your partner throws their legs to the outside and goes to outside Ashi, keep your second leg back to prevent them from grabbing it.
  2. Since the opponent's leg is locked around yours, you can't simply separate their feet and step out. Instead, drop to one knee.
  3. Keep your head over your knee and stand tall to prevent your heel from being exposed.
  4. Start to get underneath their legs by taking a grip with your thumb inside their knee. Your second hand should come underneath as you rotate your hips with the intention of throwing their legs above their head.
  5. Place your hand on the mat and insert your back leg's knee right inside their hips.
  6. Sit back on your butt, keeping your left foot on the mat the whole time. If you take it off the mat, their hips will sag and you will lose your back take.
  7. Rotate their hips, ensuring your right leg is tight, lifting their hips off the mat. Be careful not to rotate them too much as this could expose you to a top side leg position.
  8. Bring your knee inside and lift them just enough to expose their back. Your hand should go to the shoulder, while the other hand controls their leg.
  9. Pass your left leg inside to get your twister hook. The act of lifting their hips up makes it easier for this leg to come in.
  10. Lock your hands together and you're on your partner's back, ready for the choking arm.
