About this video
From a knee cut position, if your partner extends their body away using a knee shield, you can counter this by:
- Posting on their hip and placing your hand on the mat in line with their head. Shift your weight onto your right leg and left hand.
- Free your left leg to move and pummel your toes inside their knee. Open your hips and thrust forward to clear the knee shield, shooting your hips to the other side.
- Once you've cleared the knee shield, connect your knee and heel, creating a top-side ashi position.
- Control their ankle, lean forward to extract your right leg, and kick your knee back, transitioning into a saddle position. This offers better leg locking positions and chances to attack their upper body.
- If the saddle position isn't working, or you need to pass their guard, look for an underhook. Slide your knee down towards their knee, passing your knee inside. This creates a position with two shins inside their knee.
- Let go with your right hand as your right leg comes out. Establish chest to chest contact, head to head, and maintain the underhook. Use your knee to drive back and establish your guard.
