About this video

Transitioning from the pummel pass position to the knee cut position:

  1. Start in the pummel pass position with your hand on the mat and the other gripping the opponent's armpit. Most of your weight should be on your right side to maintain balance.
  2. To switch to a knee cut, shift your weight over, place your other hand on the mat and grip the opponent's armpit with the other hand. Make sure to shift your grips and your weight.
  3. Keep your elbow glued to your thigh, lift your hips and knee cut to the other side.
  4. If the opponent makes space, you can easily convert back to the knee cut position.

Transitioning from the knee cut position to the pummel pass position:

  1. If you're having difficulty in the knee cut position, push the opponent's shoulder down, place your hand on the mat and cut your knee across the hip to the far side.
  2. As you do this, place your other hand on the mat and grip the opponent's armpit. You're now back in the pummel pass position.
  3. You can easily switch sides with these positions, threatening different options without having to disengage.

Dealing with the opponent's butterfly hook:

  1. If the opponent puts in a butterfly hook while you're in the knee cut position, hit an outside pummel to put yourself in the pummel pass position.
  2. From here, you can start to pass from this side and work all your options.

Remember, the key is to keep your weight on the side where you have your hand and foot on the mat. This makes it difficult for the opponent to elevate you. When switching sides, make sure to shift your weight accordingly to maintain balance.
