About this video

Setting up the Pummel Pass involves a different passing position, similar to the knee cut position, but with the knee on the opposite side of the opponent's hip. Here's how to execute it:

  1. Start with your partner having two inside hooks. Pummel your leg inside, then drop your knee to the mat.
  2. Place your hand on the mat above your partner's head. Your partner should be seated, and you should step a leg in the middle.
  3. Instead of stepping in and going into your knee cut, step to the other hip, drive your knee forward, and begin your pass.
  4. If your partner is defending inside position with his legs, start to come around to the side. As he follows you, step in and get into the same position.
  5. Ensure your knee is on the mat next to his hip, with your toes on the mat and curling into his knee, turning out in this direction. This prevents your partner from executing an elbow escape.
  6. The hand on the side of the leg that's trapped should stay on the mat. This provides balance and prevents you from falling over if your partner off balances you.
  7. Keep your head over your partner's head. This hand can do any number of things, and this leg remains relatively light. All your weight should be on your right knee, right foot, and right hand.
  8. As long as you stay head over head, you're in a relatively safe position and can go into all your attacks.
  9. Be aware that if your leg comes out, your partner has an easy entry in on your legs, and you'll have to address this.

This technique provides a strong control and can be used to pass the opponent's guard, create off balances, or pull yourself in for an attack.
