Transitioning from a D'Arce choke to a triangle choke when passing the guard:
- After clearing your partner's knee shield and initiating your passing sequence, your partner may frame into you. In response, pull their arm across and drop your weight to set up a D'Arce choke.
- If your partner is able to free their arm and make it an underarm, you can still finish the D'Arce choke, but it requires more effort. In this case, consider switching to a triangle choke.
- Notice that your partner's freed arm is extended and the bottom arm is tucked in tight. To clear the bottom arm, slide your knee over it.
- Lean in the direction of the cleared arm to lighten your opposite leg. This allows you to throw your leg over your partner's back.
- As you throw your leg over, simultaneously throw your other leg over to form a triangle. Hold your partner's head and arm in place.
- Just like in guard, lean back, bring your leg over, and cross your ankles. Grab your shin and place your hand on the mat.
- Turn your ankle and lock your triangle. To finish from this position, walk around and hook your partner's leg as if you were underhooking their leg from guard, then apply pressure to complete the choke.
