About this video

When caught in the standard ashi, avoid turning back into your opponent to prevent injury. Instead, use the top hand to post on their ankle and drive your knee through to clear your knee line. The goal is to free your knee before it hits the mat.

  1. As your opponent begins to reap and turn you, post on their top leg and work to get your knee out. The aim is to get your knee outside the lock of their legs before your knee touches the mat.
  2. Once your knee is free, place both hands on the mat and take a back step, inserting your knee into their hip.
  3. Immediately roll over your left shoulder, grabbing their free leg. Your foot should be on the mat, pressing into their hamstring, and lift their hips up.
  4. Move your hand to their shoulder, pull your leg inside to a twist throw, and climb their back to take it. Secure your position with a seatbelt grip.

This technique requires quick reactions and precise movements to successfully escape the ashi garami and transition into a dominant position.
