About this video

When passing guard, you may end up in an inside heel up position from the top. If your opponent inverts and forms an inside triangle, you can counter this by performing a back kick. This technique can free your knee and threaten your opponent's back.

  1. Push down on your opponent's knee with your thumb inside the crook of the knee, while your other hand reaches for their hip. Keep your foot on the mat to prevent your heel from being exposed.
  2. Lift your opponent's hip as you push their knee, aiming to rotate their head between your legs. This rotation relieves tension on your knee.
  3. Step inside with your leg so your knee is on your opponent's hip. Switch your hand from their knee to their hip.
  4. Roll over your right shoulder. Your foot should come on the mat and your knee should rotate your opponent up.
  5. Once you're in position, come around your opponent's shoulders, put your twister hook in, and take their back.

If you end up in a saddle position from the top, the same technique can be applied. The key is to rotate your opponent's hips, bringing their head between your legs. This rotation frees your knee from danger. Once your knee is free, step inside, switch your hands, and roll over your shoulder. You can then lift your opponent's hips off the mat, feed your twister hook in, and take their back.
