About this video
Defending against a leg drag from De La Riva guard involves a sequence of movements to off-balance and sweep the opponent.
- Start by pushing the opponent away from the De La Riva guard position.
- Cross your leg all the way to the other side of the opponent's body, then return your hook to the front, behind the opponent's ankle.
- With the hook in place, extend your leg to off-balance the opponent. Their leg will be trapped, making it difficult for them to maintain balance.
- Kick the opponent's outside leg off while sitting on their other leg to further compromise their balance.
- As the opponent falls, recover your inside leg to complete the sweep.
- It's optional to maintain both grips on the opponent; if you can't, it's still manageable as the primary control is with your leg.
- Finally, sweep the opponent's knees out, come up on your elbow, and recover the inside leg to secure the position.
