About this video
Adjusting the De La Riva guard when the opponent stands up involves a shift in control to maintain off-balancing and prepare for sweeps. The following technique is employed:
- Instead of pushing the opponent's leg with the foot on the outside of their thigh, place the foot right behind their knee to maintain control.
- Use the De La Riva hook and shin pressure against the opponent's leg, keeping it towards your thigh, to control their balance.
- Keep your knee pointed towards your head, not to the outside, to prevent the opponent from easily removing the De La Riva hook.
- Ensure a strong grip on the opponent's ankle and maintain pressure with your hook to prevent them from pinching your leg down and turning their leg out.
- Keep the opponent's heel off the ground with your hook tight, your grip secure, and your foot behind their knee to create off-balancing.
- For overhead sweeps, ensure the opponent's head passes an imaginary line across your belt to enable a successful sweep.
- If planning a different sweep where you come up, make sure the opponent's head does not pass above the line to maintain control and execute the sweep.
