About this video

Establishing an effective De La Riva hook requires proper positioning and control. Flexibility limitations can be addressed by moving the hip outside to insert the De La Riva hook. The foot must be active and tight on the opponent's thigh, ensuring the hook is high and pressure is applied with the shin against the opponent's leg. This creates a squeezing effect between the shin and thigh, locking the opponent's leg and making it difficult for them to turn out and pass.

Maintaining a grip on the opponent's heel is crucial for control. The foot should be positioned higher, not just passing through, and the thigh should be squeezing towards the opponent's calf. This off-balances the opponent and secures their leg.

While some practitioners may choose to grip the pants, it is recommended to hold the opponent's ankle with the forearm. This prevents the opponent from easily turning their foot out. The forearm acts as a barrier, making it easier to lift the opponent's leg and maintain control as they are unable to turn due to the block created by the forearm.
