About this video
Executing a sweep from the De La Riva guard when the opponent attempts to pass:
- When the opponent tries to pop the De La Riva hook and push the leg down, maintain the secondary hook behind their knee.
- Quickly remove the De La Riva hook, push the opponent away to create space and momentum for the sweep setup.
- Release the grip on the opponent's gi or wrist, turn the foot on the mat, and place the hand on the mat for support.
- Reach the arm behind the opponent's leg and secure a grip on their gi or wrist.
- Execute the sweep by lifting and squeezing the opponent's leg between your calf and thigh, similar to the principle used in another sweep.
- Ensure the opponent cannot recover by keeping pressure and control over their leg.
- After completing the sweep, stay back to avoid immediate counter-sweeps and to secure the two points for the sweep.
- If the opponent does not immediately attempt to recover guard, proceed with the same guard pass as previously demonstrated: underhook, grip, and transition to side control.
- Throughout the sweep, maintain pressure on the opponent's leg to prevent them from regaining posture or control.
