About this video
Executing a sweep against stronger or heavier opponents from the De La Riva guard involves a series of steps to off-balance and topple the opponent.
- Maintain grips on both sides of the opponent's gi while they apply pressure on your hooking leg.
- Turn your body slightly sideways to create space between your hip and their ankle, which is off-balance.
- Slide your forearm towards your elbow joint, aiming to grab the opponent's ankle and pull it towards your head.
- As you remove your hook as the opponent desires, simultaneously kick their leg with your thigh against their shin and pull their leg towards you to make them fall.
- Insert your leg inside as they start to fall and use the momentum to sit up.
- Use your hand to cup their leg and pull up to prevent them from escaping and to complete the sweep.
- Push the opponent away with your other leg to create space for the sweep.
- Place your foot on the mat and either cup their leg or hold their pants to assist in sitting up.
- Avoid placing your leg in a position where the opponent could trap you in a triangle choke.
- Execute the sweep by pushing the opponent away and kicking at the same time, then come on top to establish control.
