About this video
Maintaining strong grips is crucial, and there are various ways to grip effectively. One preferred method is to grab without putting fingers inside the gi, ensuring a solid hold. A key detail to enhance this grip is to keep it inside the thigh, with the foot on the opponent's hip. This position makes it difficult for the opponent to rotate their hand to break the grip due to limited space.
While it may be necessary to move the grip outside to execute certain sweeps, it's essential to first establish a tight De La Riva hook, secure the grip, and off-balance the opponent. Keeping the grip in 'safe mode' near the thigh and foot on the hip ensures better control and sets up an advantageous position to initiate sweeps.
