About this video

Executing a single leg takedown from the De La Riva guard involves creating space to sit up. Push the opponent away to generate the necessary gap. If the opponent grips your lapel, break it to prevent them from underhooking and gaining control.

  1. With the heel hook grip in place, push the opponent away and sit up while moving to the inside.
  2. Switch the sleeve grip to the other hand as you position your arm behind the opponent's knee.
  3. Place your free hand on the mat behind you for leverage, preventing the opponent from trapping your arm and forcing you back down.
  4. Drop your leg down, maintaining pressure on the opposite side, and position your head against the opponent's ribs.
  5. Point your knee down as if walking, and place your hand on the opponent's calf.
  6. Step back with your outside leg to create space, then move to the outside and inside to break the grip behind the opponent's knee.
  7. Keep your leg tight behind the opponent's knee, using your hand as a block to prevent them from applying pressure with their knee.
  8. Ensure your head is not on the opponent's thigh but rather near their ribs to avoid guillotine attempts.
  9. Stand up on the leg you're controlling, hold the opponent's leg under the calf, sit up, back step with the outside leg, apply head pressure, and execute the takedown.
