About this video
Defending against a leg drag from De La Riva guard involves a series of steps to prevent the opponent from executing the pass and to set up a counter-attack:
- Maintain a strong De La Riva hook and switch the controlling hand to the other side while applying pressure with the heel.
- Anticipate the opponent's back pressure as they attempt to back step, which is a common reaction to avoid being swept.
- Use the free leg to push against the opponent's thigh, creating space and leverage.
- Deepen the De La Riva hook by reaching for the thigh, and shift onto the shoulder to prepare for a heel hook transition.
- Move the free leg across to the other side, effectively changing the angle and positioning for the heel hook.
- Shift the hips and pass the opponent's leg over, while keeping the De La Riva hook in place on top.
- Insert the other leg in between the opponent's leg and your own, transitioning into an X-Guard position.
- Use both legs to off-balance the opponent by bringing them towards you, making them light and easier to manipulate.
- Secure the opponent's arm and leg or belt, and execute a kick to elevate them into a leg drag position.
- Complete the sweep by kicking upwards, using the momentum to come up on top in a leg drag position.
