About this video

Defending against a leg drag from De La Riva guard involves a series of steps to prevent the opponent from executing the pass and to set up a counter-attack:

  1. Maintain a strong De La Riva hook and switch the controlling hand to the other side while applying pressure with the heel.
  2. Anticipate the opponent's back pressure as they attempt to back step, which is a common reaction to avoid being swept.
  3. Use the free leg to push against the opponent's thigh, creating space and leverage.
  4. Deepen the De La Riva hook by reaching for the thigh, and shift onto the shoulder to prepare for a heel hook transition.
  5. Move the free leg across to the other side, effectively changing the angle and positioning for the heel hook.
  6. Shift the hips and pass the opponent's leg over, while keeping the De La Riva hook in place on top.
  7. Insert the other leg in between the opponent's leg and your own, transitioning into an X-Guard position.
  8. Use both legs to off-balance the opponent by bringing them towards you, making them light and easier to manipulate.
  9. Secure the opponent's arm and leg or belt, and execute a kick to elevate them into a leg drag position.
  10. Complete the sweep by kicking upwards, using the momentum to come up on top in a leg drag position.
