About this video
Executing the backwards sweep from De La Riva guard:
- Start by holding the belt and setting up for the initial sweep.
- When the opponent shifts their weight to counterbalance, posturing backwards, adjust your strategy.
- Shift your hip back to create space to place your foot inside their knee.
- Maintain your grip on the belt and switch your other grip to their heel.
- With the grips secured, kick upwards to off-balance your opponent while trapping their leg with yours.
- Use the belt grip to push them down as you trap their leg with an underhook.
- Release the belt grip and switch your legs using a windshield wiper motion to complete the sweep.
- If you encounter resistance when trying to come up on your elbow, you can use your hand to assist or quickly recover your leg to maintain the hook.
- Keep the grip on the heel to prevent the opponent from escaping or countering with their own sweep.
- Use your head for additional control as you execute the windshield wiper motion to finalize the sweep.
