About this video
Executing the De La Riva Overhead Sweep requires ensuring the opponent's head is above an imaginary line drawn across your hips. If their head is below this line, the sweep will not work as you'll only push them away rather than lifting them.
- Start by establishing a strong De La Riva hook with pressure, bringing your knee towards your head and maintaining control of your opponent.
- Bring your opponent towards you, reaching behind their elbow with one arm and placing your other hook behind their knee.
- Switch the hook to the inside of their hips, which allows you to elevate them with a leg press motion.
- Once elevated, turn them over and transition to the mount, maintaining tight control of the grips.
- Ensure the opponent's head is above your hip line during the sweep. Control their elbow and switch your hooks as needed.
- If the opponent places their hand to prevent the overhead sweep, remove their arm by scissoring your legs.
- Complete the sweep to the side, following up with either a mount or knee on belly position, depending on your preference.
Remember to keep the opponent off balance and control their elbow and arm throughout the sweep. If the overhead sweep is not possible due to their hand placement, use the scissor motion to complete the sweep to the side.
