About this video
Executing an armbar from the De La Riva Guard involves several steps:
- Start in the De La Riva Guard, maintaining control of the opponent's hand and breaking their balance.
- Attempt a scissor sweep. If the opponent bases out with both hands to prevent the sweep, prepare to transition to the armbar.
- Switch your De La Riva hook to the outside of the opponent's leg.
- Shift your hips and swing your leg over the opponent's head to secure the armbar position.
- Ensure your legs are tight around the opponent's body and control their arm firmly.
- For better control, you can use a Kimura grip on the arm or a regular armbar grip.
- Practice the transition with a partner who places their hands on the mat, allowing you to break their balance and lift them as you would in a live situation.
- Remember to switch your hip and choose the correct leg to swing over based on the side you're attacking.
This technique is a variation of the armbar from the closed guard, adapted to the De La Riva Guard, and is effective when the opponent has a strong base and resists the initial sweep attempt.
