About this video

Using the outside hook of the leg can be a powerful tool in BJJ. Here are some key points:
  1. Hooking the outside of your opponent's leg can force them to pass to a specific side. This allows you to dictate the direction of the fight and establish position.
  2. Start by playing your staggered guard, cutting your angle, and then establishing your hook on the outside. This forces your opponent to pass in a certain direction, allowing you to cut your angles.
  3. Once you've established your outside hook, you can force a lead leg. If you'd like, you can also incorporate using a foot post to create another off-balance.
  4. Another option when using the outside hook is to create an off-balance. As your opponent goes to take weight off that foot, you can create a significant off-balance. This can lead to back exposure, but the main goal is to create an off-balance that forces a reset.
  5. To create an off-balance with the hook, hook the leg and send the foot out while also retracting and pulling it. This forces your opponent to reset.
  6. After forcing a reset, you can start attacking the leg or force your opponent to square back up and step back. This gives you the ability to reset the position. If you're not liking what's going on, you can always force a big off-balance, causing your opponent to reset what they're doing. This gives you the ability to also reset what you're doing and start working on your other attacks.
