- Try to avoid getting put to your back. If the opponent grabs your foot, grab the elbow. Maintain this connection and keep your knee and elbow connected to prevent your feet from getting stacked overhead.
- Always try to sit up when the opponent creates distance. Get your connection, fall back, and use shin to shin elevation to get in.
- Control the four corners (knee and elbow connected on top side, knee and elbow connected on the bottom side) to maintain a good side guard position.
- Win the wrist fight and off-balance with a John Wayne sweep. Try to climb the leg up into a leg drag.
- When the opponent starts to turn your hips away, pummel inside and start looking to face them using a stiff arm, but do not commit to the stiff arm and come up.
