About this video
When your opponent attempts a cross step, you can use a scissoring motion to recover:
- As your opponent steps, maintain your position. The key is to create a scissoring motion with your legs.
- Ensure you have three points of connection, two on one side and one on the other. The point of connection should not be below the knee, as this allows your opponent to pummel and change angles.
- When your opponent cross steps, position your foot across their hip. This gives you the ability to circle in either direction and stay in front.
- Lift your hips and return to having two hooks inside. This prevents your opponent from stepping past your hip line.
- As your opponent tries to move, lift your hips. This allows you to square up and place your two hooks inside the thighs, not the knees. This positioning prevents a leg pummel.
- Use the connection to square yourself up as your opponent continues to move. This involves using a scissoring motion, which will be further explored in the side guard.
