About this video
Recovering from a chest-to-chest half guard situation:
- When your opponent has good head and arm control, cross face and under hook, and goes to a half guard, you need to force the side guard.
- Start by getting your frames in. As your opponent starts to pass, catch their heel like you're trying to lock up a quarter guard. This is not to prevent the pass, but to buy time to pull your elbow in.
- Pinch your knees and pull your elbow in front of your knee. As your opponent tries to finish their pass, hip escape off your bottom leg, give a shrug, and pull your elbow in to force the side guard.
- Once in side guard, catch with a pinch and pummel your elbow. Incorporate your second leg by bringing your knee and shin underneath the ankle to create space.
- Control the tricep with your elbow tight to your body, and control the bicep with your elbow tight to your knee. Pummel your foot across to get back to a supine butterfly guard with two hooks inside.
