About this video

The video covers the concept of hip heisting as a method of managing distance and resetting a position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This technique is particularly useful when dealing with an opponent's forward pressure.
  1. Hip heisting can be performed in several ways, including without a collar tie, with wrist control, or in open space. The key is to heist up off your hips and then re-sit, creating a level change.
  2. The basic one-handed hip heist with a hand on the floor starts from a staggered position and is essentially a technical get up. The grip used can vary depending on the situation. For example, if the opponent's head is low in front of you, a strong collar tie can be used while maintaining knee and elbow connection.
  3. As the opponent tries to pressure forward, a hip heist can be used to create an off balance. This can lead to opportunities to attack the upper body or the neck, depending on the opponent's reaction.
  4. When performing a hip heist, if you feel too much pressure and can't get anything going, heist your hips up. Depending on the opponent's reaction, you can either sit with distance or pull yourself into close distance if the opponent's head comes up with you.
  5. The hip heist technique is not only about maintaining distance but also about getting the opponent to consistently change levels. This level change moves the opponent's head and hands out of the way, allowing you to close distance and start attacking.
  6. When performing a hip heist, you can use your hand, collar tie, post, or grab the wrist. The important thing is to pull your hips out and move slightly on an angle as you heist. Depending on the opponent's reaction, you can either re-sit and close distance, or if the head stays low, snap down and start attacking the neck.
  7. The hip heist technique is a part of an active butterfly guard, creating off balancing by changing the level. This allows you to manage distance or close distance as needed.
