About this video

This is a detailed breakdown of guard retention techniques and strategies:

  1. When your opponent tries to pass your guard, focus on maintaining frames and controlling the inside corners. This can be achieved by using your hand to create a frame and keeping your knee pointed towards the floor.
  2. When your opponent moves around to the north-south position, concentrate on bringing your knee inside to maintain distance and keep your knees to your chest. This will make your opponent want to back out as they will feel that you are maintaining the inside space.
  3. When retaining the guard, wrist control is very important. Controlling your opponent's wrist prevents them from grabbing your knee and throwing your legs out of the way. This control also prevents your opponent from assisting in their passing motion.
  4. When your opponent tries to clear the outside Ashi, control their wrist immediately. This prevents them from grabbing your ankle for a leg drag or starting to work their way to knee and hip for outside passing motion.
  5. When your opponent tries to switch sides, off-balance them
