About this video
The R Guard is presented as a viable attacking guard, offering an alternative to the De La Riva guard. It reduces the risk of back steps and stack passing, and allows for the creation of off balance.
- The R Guard is initiated from a reinforced De La Riva position, preventing the opponent from driving their knee forward into a knee cut.
- Frames are used to prevent getting smashed, while the legs are used as levers to create off balance.
- Compared to the De La Riva guard, the R Guard reduces the risk of the opponent collecting the knee line and back stepping into a cross Ashi position.
- It also reduces the risk of the opponent getting a scoop grip on the top leg, which can lead to stack passing.
- In the R Guard, even if the opponent tries to smash the knees together, off balance can be created through framing, and feet can be pummeled back to the inside.
- If the guard player gets smashed badly and can't create frames, the knee can be glued back to the chest to establish a side guard on the same side the opponent is trying to smash the knees to.
- This guard reduces the risk of having to recover from back steps and scoop grips, and allows for space creation to bring the knees to the chest and force a side guard to recover.
The R Guard is recommended as a strong position to play, especially as an attacking guard when forced to a supine position, or if a more supine position is preferred.
