Defending against a North South position:
  1. When your opponent moves to a North South position, always keep the soles of your feet in front of them. Whichever side they come out, keep your knees glued to your chest.
  2. Prevent your opponent from getting tight. If they do manage to get tight, bring your knees in.
  3. Before your opponent can get tight, maintain a glued chest. Flame your guard to prevent them from throwing your legs side to side.
  4. Extend one leg to find the hook. Once you've found the hook, recover by putting two hooks in again.
  5. As your opponent moves around North South, keep the soles of your feet in front of them. If they try to throw your legs by, cross the center line and hide your ankles by putting two hooks in.
  6. Keep your knees glued to your chest and your guard framed. Create a hook on the outside of the hip, then create two hooks inside the hips, finding that inside position. This is if they're a little bit further away. If they're a little bit closer, the approach will be a little bit different.
This is the basic defense against a North South position.
