About this video

During a sparring session with Tom, several guard positions and transitions are demonstrated:

  1. Initial movements involve framing and pummeling inside, with the knee kept low to allow for potential inversions.
  2. When Tom clears the De La Riva guard, the knee is brought inside to regain control.
  3. In a north-south position, an overwrap grip is used to control the opponent's wrist and prevent them from pulling away. This grip can also be used for arm lock transitions.
  4. Two-on-one control is established to maintain connection and transition into a shin-to-shin position.
  5. Off-balancing is created to initiate attacks.
  6. When the opponent stands tall in an inside De La Riva position, an inversion is initiated. A grip is used to trap the arm and reduce the risk of counterattacks.
  7. Hand fighting is used to clear the opponent's control and regain control of the leg. This allows for sitting back up and establishing two-on-one control.
  8. The two-on-one grip is used to pull in the opponent's floating leg and transition into a bear trap position.
  9. A lockdown from x guard is used as a sweeping technique.
  10. Single leg x is used to create off-balancing and return to a seated position.
  11. Hand fighting and wrist grips are used to regain control and transition into a shallow K guard.
  12. A false reap is used to sweep the opponent.

In a subsequent roll, the following techniques are demonstrated:

  1. Winning the grip fight and breaking down the opponent's position.
  2. Creating space and getting underneath the opponent using a thumb post.
  3. Transitioning into a backside 50/50 position.
  4. Using a calf cutter to prevent the opponent from countering an outside Ashi position.
  5. Winning the wrist fight and framing to prevent the opponent from cutting angles.
  6. Using a bicep lace to neutralize the opponent's grip switching.
  7. Using the bicep lace to invert and enter a backside position.
