Craig Jones was born on July 17, 1991, in Adelaide, Australia, and found his way to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through a family connection — he began training in 2006 at an academy run by his cousin. The sport took hold quickly, and as his skill progressed through the colored belt ranks, Jones made a pivotal geographic decision: after earning his purple belt, he relocated to Melbourne to train under Lachlan Giles. That partnership proved formative. Giles guided Jones through his development all the way to black belt, laying the technical and competitive foundation that would carry him to the sport's highest levels.

Even at the colored belt stage, Jones signaled elite potential on the competition circuit. He won the ADCC Asian and Oceania Trials in both 2014 and 2016, captured the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship at purple belt in 2015, and added the AFBJJF Pan Pacific Championship and the NAGA World Championship in 2014 to a growing résumé. A third-place finish at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro at brown belt in 2016 rounded out a colored belt career that left little doubt about where his trajectory was heading.

The decision that reshaped Jones's career came when he joined John Danaher's training group, then based in the "Blue Basement" at Renzo Gracie Academy in New York. Reflecting on that choice in a 2026 podcast appearance on Episode 145 of the BJJ Balance podcast, Jones recalled that the no-gi focus of Danaher's group was the decisive draw — at the time, 10th Planet was the only prominent no-gi–oriented school, but watching the heel hook proficiency of Danaher's athletes made the direction clear.

In that same discussion, Jones offered a layered assessment of why Danaher's coaching produced such consistently elite results. He credited Danaher's rare analytical capacity — the ability to observe what worked and what failed, address injuries, and articulate technique with a precision and vocabulary that few instructors could match. But Jones was equally emphatic about the environment itself. He described Renzo Gracie Academy as a natural gathering point for elite talent, with figures like Rodrigo Gracie and Marcelo Garcia nearby and a stream of high-level athletes passing through even in the group's earliest days. In Jones's view, Danaher would likely acknowledge that being positioned at Renzo's gave him front-row access to elite technique — to deeply understand it and then systematically teach those proven methods — an advantage few coaches in the sport have ever enjoyed.

Within the Danaher Death Squad, Jones developed the leg lock systems and no-gi competition philosophy that would define his competitive identity. That framework culminated in a landmark result at ADCC 2019 World Championship, where Jones earned a silver medal in the under 88 kg division — the signature achievement of his New York years and a result that announced him as one of the most dangerous submission grapplers on the planet.

Jones's history at the ADCC World Championship tells the story of a competitor who performed at the highest level across multiple weight classes and across years of elite evolution in the sport. He competed in the under 88 kg division across three consecutive ADCC editions, building a 5-4 record in that bracket, with the 2019 silver medal standing as the defining result of that run.

At ADCC 2022 World Championship, Jones moved up to the under 99 kg division — a significant weight jump that placed him against physically larger opponents — and earned a second silver medal. His path to the final ended in an 11-0 defeat against Kaynan Duarte, a result that nonetheless underscored his ability to compete deep into a bracket above his natural weight class.

When ADCC 2024 World Championship arrived in Las Vegas in August 2024, Jones made a deliberate choice not to compete. Instead, he organized the Craig Jones Invitational on the same weekend and at the same venue — an explicit act of protest against what he viewed as ADCC's inadequate fighter pay. The decision cost him the chance to defend his standing in the bracket but established him as the sport's most prominent voice for athlete compensation reform.

In August 2026, when a vacancy emerged in the under 88 kg division for ADCC 2026 World Championship following the withdrawal of Jacob Rodriguez, Jones publicly offered himself as a late replacement by posting on ADCC's official Instagram account. The gesture signaled a thaw in his relationship with the organization following years of open rivalry. He was not, however, selected to fill the spot.

In early 2021, the Danaher Death Squad fractured, and Jones emerged from that rupture as a team founder rather than a free agent. He departed alongside Nicky Ryan, Nick Rodriguez, and Ethan Crelinsten to establish B-Team Jiu-Jitsu in Austin, Texas — a deliberate effort to build a team culture that was less rigid and less hierarchical than what they had experienced under Danaher.

Jones later gestured at the underlying tensions with characteristic sarcasm, noting publicly that the group had left "because John was just training us too hard — not because of… the abuse Gordon was doing." The remark, delivered in his signature deadpan register, communicated something real about the fracture while maintaining plausible deniability through humor.

At B-Team, Jones constructed a coaching philosophy around a premise he articulated repeatedly: a relaxed mind learns faster. The results on the competition mats — with athletes like Nicky Rodriguez and Ethan Crelinsten continuing to perform at elite levels — suggested the approach was more than a rationalization for a lighter atmosphere. Jones mentored teammates, cornered them at major events, and brought the leg lock systems and positional frameworks he had absorbed during the DDS years into a more experimental, open-ended environment.

By August 2025, Jones announced publicly that he was stepping away from B-Team, describing himself as "the absent father" — a coach and brand figurehead whose traveling lifestyle made genuine gym management impossible. He characterized gym ownership as carrying "all the worst parts about being the promoter," managing relationships and enforcing rules from afar. He acknowledged that he had never intended to open a gym, saying he felt compelled to do so by the circumstances of the DDS split, and stated his belief that the gym should adopt a new name so that his personal brand would not overshadow the athletes and coaches who remained.

Despite the announced departure, Jones had already set in motion a broader reconciliation within the sport. In early 2025, he posted a photo shaking hands with John Danaher, captioning the image "systematically rebuilding bridges" — signaling the end of a public rift that had lasted roughly four years since the DDS split. The grappling community widely noted the moment as a full-circle development for two figures whose partnership had shaped a generation of no-gi competition.

Parallel to his competitive and entrepreneurial work, Jones built a significant reputation as an MMA grappling coach, with his partnership with Alexander Volkanovski serving as the most visible expression of that role. In 2021, Jones served as Volkanovski's jiu-jitsu coach on The Ultimate Fighter 29, in which Volkanovski and Brian Ortega faced off as opposing coaches. The season gave Jones a large mainstream combat sports audience — and he nearly squandered it through his own mischief. A prank in which he pretended to insert a rival coach's COVID test swab somewhere inappropriate did not go over well with UFC production, and Jones came close to being removed from the show entirely.

The more substantive work happened off camera. Jones cornered Volkanovski in UFC featherweight title fights and contributed directly to the submission escape preparation that proved decisive when Ortega threatened to finish the champion with multiple chokes and arm attacks in their title rematch. Volkanovski's survival of those moments — credited in part to the escape drilling Jones oversaw — became one of the more discussed examples of BJJ coaching translating directly to an MMA title fight outcome.

Jones's capacity to take high-level grappling concepts and make them applicable in an MMA context — where strikes, rules, and scramble dynamics all shift the calculus — made him a valued resource beyond the Volkanovski camp. His coaching work represents a broader contribution to the sport: a bridge between the analytical, submission-focused world of elite no-gi grappling and the practical demands of mixed martial arts competition.

The Craig Jones Invitational (CJI) emerged in 2024 as the most tangible expression of Jones's conviction that professional grappling had a promotion problem rather than a talent problem. Frustrated by what he viewed as fighter pay that failed to reflect the sport's competitive quality, Jones designed an event around a total prize pool of approximately $2.2 million — structured as $1 million to each of two bracket winners, $10,001 paid to each of the 32 competitors simply for participating, and a $50,000 submission bonus. He then scheduled the inaugural CJI on the same weekend and at the same Las Vegas venue as ADCC 2024 World Championship, booking the space as a direct competitive challenge to the incumbent promotion.

The format featured two 16-man brackets divided at 80 kg, streamed free on YouTube, with Jones explicitly positioning the event as athlete-first in both pay structure and distribution model. Concurrent viewership peaked at approximately 130,000 live viewers — a number Jones returned to repeatedly in subsequent months when comparing creator-driven grappling events against competing broadcast metrics.

In a 2026 interview with MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, Jones disclosed that the lead-up to CJI 1 had included a near-booking that never materialized: a celebrity superfight between Mark Zuckerberg and Tom Hardy. Jones was candid about the limits of what he could say — "I don't know if I'm legally allowed to say this" — before describing how close the match came to being finalized: "We did come very close. I think it was more of a timing issue. They both agreed to it in principle… Scary for Tom [Hardy] to face [Mark] Zuckerberg because if he loses, it's hard to be the action star anymore." The fight ultimately fell through, but the disclosure illustrated the scale of Jones's promotional ambitions from the outset.

Jones competed himself at CJI 1, appearing in what was billed as the "biggest intergender match of all time" against Gabi Garcia. For CJI 2, a headline superfight against Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson was arranged, though Steveson withdrew from the bout in August 2025. Jones subsequently broke down the CJI 2 team scoring in detail for media, explaining the judging framework that resulted in B-Team Jiu-Jitsu winning the event's team competition.

By early 2026, the future of a third edition was reported as uncertain despite financing having been secured. In February 2026, Jones issued what he later described as a frustrated, non-serious ultimatum: that CJI 3 would be staged opposite ADCC 2026 World Championship in Poland if Izaak Michell — who had qualified for ADCC 2026 and faced an active Texas arrest warrant — was not removed from the event. Jones subsequently clarified that the Poland statement was made in frustration and was not a genuine plan.

Across the grappling media landscape, CJI became shorthand for a broader argument: that the sport's ceiling was limited less by the quality of its athletes than by the quality of its promotion, and that events built around competitor-first economics and accessible streaming could reach audiences that traditional tournament formats had not.

Jones traces the origin of his submission-finishing outlook to a specific influence: Eddie Cummings's butterfly elevation to cross ashi. Watching that entry illuminate the heel hook's finishing potential against elite-level opponents — Jones has referenced defeating "that legend, Leandro Lo" as a concrete example of what those tools made possible — shaped his understanding of what competitive jiu-jitsu rewarded.

He frames the sport as an "arms race," arguing in a December 2025 instructional context that communities resistant to new techniques repeatedly find themselves on the wrong side of history. The examples he cites — community pushback against berimbolo, deep half guard, and 50/50 — illustrate a pattern he sees as a recurring failure of conservatism. His reference to art critic Robert Hughes's The Shock of the New places that resistance within a broader cultural argument: innovation is always met with discomfort before it becomes orthodoxy.

The practical expression of that philosophy in Jones's own game centers on perpetual motion, scrambling, and forward pressure. He has stated his positional stance plainly: "Bottom players cope. Top players win rounds." The phrasing is characteristically blunt but carries a coherent argument — that static bottom play concedes initiative in ways that accumulate across the course of a match.

His Octopus Guard 2.0 instructional, released on BJJ Fanatics and listed under Adam Wardzinski, generated approximately $300,000 in gross sales in its initial three-to-four week window. When Gordon Ryan released a public counter video addressing the Octopus Guard system, Jones responded by thanking Ryan for the attention — joking that a simple crossface was the key answer — while noting that the response drove further instructional sales.

In his Power Ride instructional, Jones extends his technical critique to the IBJJF points system itself. His central argument is that the system was designed around positions associated with ground-and-pound effectiveness — side control, mount, back control — that rarely produce finishes in modern MMA competition. He contends that this misalignment between scoring and actual control produces inefficient grappling: athletes rush past stronger controlling positions to collect points from weaker ones.

The philosophical core of the Power Ride argument rests on a single claim: "the most dangerous part of an opponent's body is his legs." When a bottom player can place their feet on the ground, Jones argues, they retain the capacity to bridge, hip escape, and generate explosive movement regardless of the top player's nominal position. He draws support from MMA examples — Khabib Nurmagomedov's preference for staying on top of the legs in half guard rather than advancing to conventional scoring positions; Kelvin Gastelum's ability to turtle and shake opponents off from side control; Jan Blachowicz's hesitation to pass Israel Adesanya's exposed half guard — as evidence that experienced athletes intuitively recognize the control value of leg positioning even when the points system does not reward it.

His proposed solution redefines the "pin" concept: rather than positional labels, a genuine pin means the opponent "cannot move without conceding something else." The practical method for achieving that state involves leg riding, leg pinning, and control strategies drawn from folkstyle wrestling — a synthesis of competitive grappling traditions that reflects the cross-disciplinary curiosity running through Jones's entire technical identity.

Jones has directed meaningful portions of his instructional revenue toward charitable causes, with donations tied explicitly to specific sales windows and coordinated through named partners. On January 27, 2026, he announced a $30,000 donation to 1800RESPECT — Australia's 24-hour domestic violence crisis support service — representing 10 percent of revenue from the first 90 days of Octopus Guard 2.0 sales. The donation was coordinated through BJJ Fanatics and social worker Mayra Wojcik, married to B-Team's Chris Wojcik. From additional Octopus Guard 2.0 revenue, Jones directed over $35,000 to Safe Austin, a nonprofit serving people affected by assault in Austin, Texas.

In February 2026, Jones announced that his Fair Fight Foundation would donate $48,000 to ensure female competitors received equal compensation at ADCC 2026 World Championship in Poland. The donation was structured to cover a $16,000 shortfall per women's division across three divisions — the gap created when ADCC doubled men's prize purses while keeping women's payouts at prior levels. Jones accompanied the announcement with pointed commentary: "At least I forced Mo to pay the women equal." Athlete Helena Crevar publicly thanked him; Jones noted in response that the Crevar versus Sarah Galvao match at CJI had achieved the event's second-highest live viewership peak per YouTube analytics.

His criticism of the UFC's grappling venture has been consistent and substantive. In an August 2025 appearance on Demetrious Johnson's podcast, Jones described a coaching offer he received from the UFC — opposite Mikey Musumeci — as poorly organized and inadequately compensated, and suggested that elements within the organization "dislike grappling." He argued that the UFC had entered the space too late, with ONE Championship and FloGrappling-affiliated events having already locked up the sport's top athletes, and warned that a large entity without genuine athlete-first commitment could do meaningful harm to the sport's ecosystem. His critique of UFC BJJ's viewership metrics extended to a December 2025 Instagram Stories sequence in which he juxtaposed approximately 20,000 concurrent live viewers for UFC BJJ 4's co-main event against marble racing audiences of 100,000 to 300,000 and fishing streams of 50,000 to 150,000, while noting CJI's peak of approximately 130,000 concurrent viewers.

In February 2027, Jones released a satirical video critiquing exploitative structures within BJJ gyms that drew significant community attention for its candor. He coined phrases that circulated widely: "A belt is not a ranking system. It is not a measure of skill. A belt is a subscription retention device," and described exploitative gym models as "high commitment low accountability loyalty based systems" — in contrast to healthy environments where "people train, they improve, they go home, they have real friends, they have boundaries." He addressed cross-training bans, mandatory gear purchases, the performance of spirituality as cover for ethical failures, and the particular vulnerability of women entering spaces where "physical control is currency" and "hierarchy decides whose voice carries weight."

Jones also acknowledged personal complicity in the systems he was critiquing: "I've benefited from this system. I've laughed at things that felt off. I've ignored behavior because it wasn't convenient to challenge. I've chosen silence when speaking would have been uncomfortable or most importantly unprofitable." He drew a final distinction between imperfection and complicity in harm: "There is a massive difference between being imperfect and protecting harm. There is a difference between ego and covering up what people do with power to violate trust. And if we blur that line, we become a part of the structure."

He urged athletes experiencing misconduct to contact the Open Guard Foundation, which he referenced as a resource for affected individuals.

Beginning in early 2026, Jones became the most publicly active figure in the grappling community pressing for accountability in the case of Izaak Michell, a former Kingsway-affiliated competitor who faced charges in Texas connected to accusations made by Hannah Griffiths and who was listed among Hays County's Top 12 Fugitives with an active arrest warrant.

Jones funded a mobile billboard campaign in New South Wales featuring Michell's wanted poster, with reported sightings of Michell in the vicinity of Ballina, Byron Bay, and Burleigh Heads. He stated via social media that more than twenty women had come forward with allegations against Michell, that he had been working directly with detectives, and that he was helping connect affected women with therapy resources while navigating the tension between privacy and community safety.

The jurisdictional complexity of the situation — the Texas warrant is not directly enforceable in Australia — became a focal point of Jones's public commentary. He argued that Michell avoided arrest by being informed of the investigation while overseas and subsequently choosing not to return. Jones posted screenshots of what he described as text exchanges with John Danaher and Gordon Ryan about how the initial complaint had been handled, highlighting language he characterized as evidence of an advance warning to Michell. Ryan rejected Jones's account publicly; Danaher's presented message stated that Michell had been told he was no longer a member of the gym and that their friendship was over when the complaint was first made, with Danaher describing the overseas timing as intended to prevent any return to confront the victim.

When it emerged that Michell had qualified for ADCC 2026 World Championship through the Asia Trials at 77 kg, Jones issued an ultimatum in February 2026 — later characterized by him as made in frustration and not seriously intended — that CJI 3 would be staged opposite ADCC 2026 in Poland if Michell was not removed from the event. Former ADCC promoter Mo Jassim stated that his recommendation, if Michell became a confirmed fugitive by avoiding court, would be to remove Michell and award the spot to the second Trials finisher.

In March 2026, Jones released a public service announcement video directed at an unnamed coach who was allegedly threatening to cancel an athlete's visa after she reported a sexual assault connected to his academy to law enforcement. Jones stated in the video: "If you're a fan of Jesus, and I know you are, what is done in the dark will be brought to the light. And in this sport, actions like this have a funny way of following you, sometimes even into the next generation. So before you make that decision, I'd tread f***ing carefully." He accompanied the post with an Ezekiel 25:17 quote and the self-deprecating addendum, "I can't even read and they making me get biblical."

All matters relating to Michell represent allegations that had not been adjudicated as of the time of reporting.

The "Second Best Grappler" label that Jones applied to himself — a self-deprecating reference to his runner-up finishes at ADCC — became one of the more effective personal branding decisions in grappling's recent history. The joke acknowledged reality while disarming criticism, and it established a comedic register that Jones has used to navigate everything from competitive losses to public feuds.

In early 2025, the most significant personal reconciliation of his post-DDS career arrived when Jones posted a photo shaking hands with John Danaher, captioning the image "systematically rebuilding bridges." The image ended a roughly four-year public rift and was received within the community as a genuine moment of maturity from both parties.

Jones disclosed in a podcast appearance that he began his first cycle of performance-enhancing drugs in 2017 and has remained on them since — a disclosure notable for its directness in a sport where such admissions remain uncommon.

In September 2025, Jones announced publicly that he was ending his sponsorship relationship with Oscar & Frank Sunglasses, alleging the company continued using his name, image, and likeness in Meta and Instagram advertising after he had instructed them to stop. He cited contested outstanding payments and a complete breakdown in communication, addressing a company figure named Mitch directly and adding, "you still need to pay me."

In October 2025, Jones's producer Freddy Rodriguez posted a photograph on social media suggesting Jones may have been abducted in Mexico City, with a masked figure shown with firearms pressed to either side of his head. Community skepticism was significant given Jones's documented history of orchestrated pranks — including a staged arrest video at FloGrappling that the hosts later acknowledged as a hoax — and observers noted that tattoos on the depicted individual appeared consistent with Jones's own. The incident was not independently verified.

In December 2025, Jones used Instagram Stories to mock UFC BJJ 4's viewership during and after the broadcast, juxtaposing approximately 20,000 concurrent co-main event viewers against CJI's peak of approximately 130,000 and noting that marble racing and fishing streams routinely attracted larger concurrent audiences. The commentary extended a sustained public argument that creator-driven grappling promotions were outperforming the UFC's institutional entry into the space.

Jones's public commentary on the October and November 2025 arrests of Nathalia Amato Santoro — listed in court documents as the spouse of Gordon Ryan — included sharing a mugshot and a series of mocking remarks, positioning himself explicitly as Ryan's chief antagonist in the public sphere and continuing a rivalry that had extended far beyond competitive contexts.

Following a period in Mexico in late 2025, Jones announced in August 2025 that he intended to step away from the sport and "disappear" — to turn his phone off and disengage from the operational pressures he had accumulated across competing, coaching, promoting, and team management. The announcement was consistent with the broader B-Team departure statement, even as Jones continued to appear publicly across subsequent months, suggesting that the "disappearance" remained more aspiration than accomplished fact.
