He found it through Carlos Machado in Dallas, traveling from Oklahoma City once a week for private lessons and then drilling what he had learned with his son. Without a resident black belt in the household, the two relied heavily on father-and-son sessions and instructional videos — an unconventional development path that nonetheless produced extraordinary results.

At thirteen, Lovato Jr. began formally absorbing BJJ through those sessions and eventually joined his father on the trips to Dallas. By sixteen, in 2000, he was competing internationally. That year he traveled to Brazil for the IBJJF World Championships, winning two medals in the juvenile division at the Mundials and claiming gold at the Pan American Championship in the juvenile blue belt division. He made his Bellator debut on March 3, 2017, at Bellator 174, held at WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, Oklahoma.
