Rigan Machado was born on July 2, 1966, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the very epicenter of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's development. His connection to the art runs through blood and marriage: Carlos Gracie Sr., the founding patriarch of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, was his uncle by marriage — Carlos had wed the sister of Rigan's mother — ensuring that Jiu-Jitsu was woven into the fabric of daily life from his earliest years. Growing up in close proximity to the Gracie family, Rigan rolled with his cousins from a young age, absorbing the culture, philosophy, and technical language of the art long before he ever committed to it formally.

Around the age of 14 or 15, Rigan began taking Jiu-Jitsu seriously, channeling a competitive fire that would define his career. What had begun as casual rolling with cousins transformed into dedicated training, and a formidable competitor started to emerge.

As Rigan's commitment deepened, he came under the instruction of Rolls Gracie, widely regarded as one of the greatest and most innovative figures the sport has ever produced. Rigan initially intended to name his school Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, but Rorion Gracie held the legal rights to that name within the United States. With the blessing of Carlos Gracie Junior, Rigan named his school Machado Jiu-Jitsu — a brand that would grow into one of the most recognized in American BJJ.

With domestic BJJ competition in the United States offering few challenges commensurate with his level, Rigan turned to Sambo and Judo to remain sharp. He excelled in both disciplines, capturing three Pan American Championships and four national U.S. Championships in Sambo — achievements that demonstrated the breadth of his technical foundation and his ability to adapt across rulesets. Ultimately, the restrictive ground rules inherent to both formats limited his ability to fully express his Jiu-Jitsu, and Rigan stepped away from those disciplines to dedicate himself entirely to coaching.

In 1996 and 1997, he claimed Pan American Championship gold in both the weight and absolute divisions — back-to-back dominant performances that affirmed his standing among the sport's elite. He spreads the art through international seminar tours, including a December 2023 tour at his brother's Texas academy and an 8th-degree coral belt masterclass held in New Jersey in March 2024 — events that drew practitioners eager to learn directly from one of the art's living legends.

In March 2023, Rigan formalized a partnership with OYA, a luxury wellness resort platform, to integrate martial arts philosophy into high-end retreat experiences. Praising OYA's concept as sharing the "same philosophy and culture as Jiu-Jitsu," Machado positioned the collaboration as a natural extension of his belief that BJJ is fundamentally a tool for personal growth and holistic well-being — not merely a combat sport. 2024 marked a significant creative departure for Rigan Machado when he stepped behind the camera for his directorial debut on Blow for Blow, an MMA-themed action drama filmed with a professional cast. The project represented a new dimension of his influence — bringing the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts to a mainstream cinematic audience through his own artistic vision.

The film held its world premiere on April 28, 2025, at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, drawing a capacity crowd of celebrities and martial arts figures. Notable attendees included actor Jeremy Sumpter, UFC star Mackenzie Dern, actor Patrick Kilpatrick, MMA referee Mike Beltrán, actress Sofia Milos, martial arts film veteran Michael Jai White, and the Machado Brothers themselves.
