Nicky Ryan was born on June 27, 2001, and grew up in New Jersey as the younger brother of grappling phenomenon Gordon Ryan. Gordon's passion for the sport planted the seed early, and Nicky first stepped onto the mats at a local club at the age of eight. Those early years were exploratory — he trained on-and-off, dipping in and out of the sport without the singular focus that would later define his career.

That changed in early 2015, when Nicky committed to jiu-jitsu in earnest. What followed was a training life that few teenage athletes experience: daily commutes from New Jersey to New York to train within the Danaher Death Squad system at the Renzo Gracie Academy. The volume was immense, and Nicky later reflected that those multiple-session days — grueling for a teenager — likely contributed to the knee injuries that followed in his adult career. His education was equally unconventional; homeschooled with academic instruction overseen by his coach John Danaher, Nicky's intellectual and athletic development were deeply intertwined, mirroring Danaher's philosophy of treating jiu-jitsu as a thinking person's pursuit.

The results of that commitment announced themselves quickly. By 13, Nicky was competing in — and winning — adult tournaments, signaling a rare precocity that extended well beyond simple athleticism.

Training under John Danaher within the Danaher Death Squad placed Nicky Ryan inside one of the most celebrated environments in submission grappling history. Surrounded by elite competitors and immersed in Danaher's methodical, systems-based approach, Nicky absorbed the leg lock and back-control frameworks that would come to define his technical identity. His progression through the belts reflected steady development: Danaher awarded him his purple belt on June 21, 2017, his brown belt on October 9, 2019, and his black belt on November 3, 2020 — at just 18 years old.

The milestone that first brought Nicky international attention came at the ADCC 2017 World Championship, where, at 16, he became the youngest athlete ever to compete at the ADCC World Championships. That appearance followed a 3rd-place finish at the ADCC US East Coast Trials in 2016 and another 3rd-place finish at the ADCC US West Coast Trials in 2017 — results that demonstrated a teenager operating at the outer edge of elite adult competition. On the international no-gi circuit, he translated that promise into titles, winning the Polaris Invitational at 145 lbs in both 2018 and 2019.

Within the DDS training room, Nicky was more than a developing competitor — he actively contributed to the team's technical body of knowledge, assisting in leg lock and back-control classes while still a teenager. He did all of this while operating, inevitably, in the shadow of his older brother Gordon. Inside the squad, however, his reputation for technical depth and quiet precision was steadily taking shape on its own terms.

In 2021, at 19 years old, Nicky Ryan made one of the most consequential decisions of his career: he left the Danaher Death Squad following a family dispute with Gordon Ryan and, alongside Craig Jones and a group of departing training partners, co-founded B-Team Jiu-Jitsu in Austin, Texas. The move was both a practical reorganization and a deliberate act of self-definition — a chance to step fully out of Gordon's shadow and build something on his own terms.

The culture at B-Team differed meaningfully from the environment Nicky had come up in. Where the DDS carried a reputation for high-intensity, results-driven seriousness, B-Team cultivated a more open, collegial atmosphere — and Nicky embraced that shift. Teammates noted that his demeanor — quieter than Gordon's, detail-oriented, and genuinely willing to drill fundamentals with lower belts — fit naturally into the team's ethos. He became one of B-Team's resident leg lock experts, a foundational technical voice, and a co-architect of the team's identity. Craig Jones publicly credited Nicky with developing new leg-lock entries that influenced the squad's attacking game, a contribution that extended well beyond what was visible in his competitive record alone. Younger athletes, including Jozef Chen, benefited directly from his instruction — a coaching instinct that deepened further as injury progressively shifted his focus toward that role.

Nicky Ryan's competitive trajectory through the early 2020s is inseparable from one of the sport's more remarkable injury narratives. In early 2021, he tore his ACL during training, forcing him out of the ADCC Trials and derailing what had promised to be a breakthrough competitive year. Opting to attempt rehabilitation without surgery, he returned to competition — but the gamble did not hold. At the "Road to ADCC" event, he re-tore the ACL completely, leaving him with essentially no functioning ACL in his right knee.

Rather than immediately pursue surgery, Nicky continued competing, adapting his game to account for the structural deficit and often training effectively on one leg. The results, under the circumstances, were remarkable. He competed in the -77 kg division at the ADCC 2022 World Championship, claimed victory in a Who's Number One superfight in 2023, placed 1st at the ADCC US West Coast Trials in 2019, and finished 2nd at the ADCC US East Coast Trials in 2023 — demonstrating genuine competitive viability through years of significant physical compromise.

The toll, however, was real. The knee buckled even during light activity, and matters reached a breaking point during a late-2024 combat jiu-jitsu camp. As Nicky described it, the injury "completely ruined my camp… I pretty much didn't train the last three weeks." In early 2025, he underwent full ACL reconstructive surgery — his third knee surgery overall — a decision that reflected a decisive commitment to long-term health over short-term competitive appearances. It was also during this period that Nicky named a submission he had developed "The Nickotine," carving out a distinct piece of his own competitive identity.

When the Craig Jones Invitational 2 (CJI 2) arrived in 2025, Nicky Ryan had been slated to compete in the 77 kg division. His ACL reconstruction in early 2025 made that impossible, and Jozef Chen filled the slot instead. Rather than step back entirely, Nicky stepped into a different role: head coach of B-Team Jiu-Jitsu for the event. B-Team won the team title.

The manner in which he approached the role spoke to a developing coaching identity distinct from his competitive one. Nicky declined a percentage offer from CJI organizers, redirecting available resources toward the competing athletes instead. In the weeks leading up to CJI 2, he and a coaching partner implemented a hybrid training camp model built around constraints-led, games-based principles — shaped in part by ecological-dynamics advocate Greg Souders, who had visited B-Team and run sessions with the group. The structure featured brief warm-ups, competitive games, positional rounds tailored to the event rule set, real-time technical corrections, and closing question-and-answer sessions.

In a September 2025 interview ahead of CJI 2, Nicky spoke publicly about his brother, describing Gordon Ryan as "a great asset to the sport" while speculating that Gordon would not appear at the event given Craig Jones's name on it. After the event, Nicky directly addressed online debate about the legitimacy of B-Team's victory over New Wave, confirming that the win stood under the official tied-scorecard criteria governing the final match.

Nicky Ryan's coaching approach sits at a compelling intersection: the precision and systems-thinking instilled by John Danaher, filtered through B-Team's relaxed and open-door culture, and increasingly informed by ecological-dynamics principles. His adoption of the latter was not immediate. When Greg Souders visited B-Team Jiu-Jitsu and introduced constraints-led, games-based training concepts, Nicky was initially skeptical. Over time, he incorporated key elements of the framework while adapting it to his own convictions — most notably, he rejected pure discovery-based learning in favor of providing direct answers and structured end-of-session Q&A, ensuring athletes left with clarity rather than open questions.

The resulting model combines brief warm-ups, competitive games, rule-set-specific positional rounds, and real-time technical feedback — a structure he co-implemented during the CJI 2 camp and has continued to develop. During his recovery from ACL surgery in 2025 and into 2026, Nicky expanded his head-coach responsibilities at B-Team, working closely with athletes including Nicky Rodriguez, Nick Mataya, and Ally Wolski. Craig Jones has specifically credited Nicky with developing new leg-lock entries that advanced the squad's overall attacking arsenal, while younger competitors such as Jozef Chen have benefited directly from his instruction.

Looking further ahead, Nicky has spoken about ambitions that extend beyond the competition circuit — specifically, the goal of building a larger affiliation and gym once his competitive window eventually closes.

One of the clearest expressions of Nicky Ryan's competitive identity is what he has chosen not to do. As of October 2026, he has never competed in a single IBJJF event and has stated no plans to change that position. On the Simple Man Podcast, he explained his reasoning in unambiguous terms: "I always thought it was [ ] that you could never make money competing for the IBJJF. Only the IBJJF makes money." The model of paying entry fees to earn nothing in prize money while the organization profited struck him as untenable, and he declined to participate on those terms throughout his career.

He acknowledged that the IBJJF introduced prize-money events in the years prior to 2026 — specifically the no-gi Grand Prix and the gi Crown — but those developments arrived too late to meaningfully affect the career choices he had already made, and his opposition to the traditional non-paying model remains intact.

The gi format holds equally little appeal. "I'll never be transitioning into competing in the gi," he stated flatly, citing both personal preference and financial pragmatism: "there's just way more money in no-gi." His planned pathway back to competition runs through WNO and other Flo-branded events, consistent with the no-gi, commercially oriented competitive lane he has occupied since entering elite competition. On the question of timing, he was equally deliberate: "I don't want to rush this. I'm still young. I have a ton of time left."

By January 2026, approximately ten months removed from his ACL reconstruction, Nicky Ryan reported being "back to training pretty hard" and set a target of a competitive return in mid to late 2026. The daily rhythm he described — one training session per day, daily lifting, and ongoing physical therapy — stood in deliberate contrast to the punishing multi-session schedule of his teenage commuting years, a volume he regards as a contributing factor to the cascade of knee problems that followed.

The period of enforced absence reshaped his relationship with both competition and coaching. He disclosed in interviews that he dislikes competing but loves winning, and that pre-competition nerves remain significant — a candid admission from an athlete who competes at the sport's highest level. His advice to developing athletes reflects that self-awareness: keep perspective, and have fun. When unable to spar during the depths of his recovery, he stayed present on the mats daily, attending practice and remaining engaged with the team. Away from training, he filled time playing video games — a straightforward acknowledgment that elite athletes are also people who need to occupy themselves during difficult stretches.

The stakes of his physical health remain high in his own framing. He stated clearly that "if I get one more knee surgery, especially within the next one to two years, I'm just retiring from competition and just coaching" — a threshold that gives his cautious return approach added weight. When he does return, his competitive ambitions are specific: win a major title at ADCC or the Craig Jones Invitational, establish himself as the best athlete in his weight class, and build from there. After a year of extensive travel in 2025, he also planned a quieter 2026 — staying home, settling into a new house, and training without the disruption of constant movement.

In a sport that rewards loud personalities and social media provocation, Nicky Ryan presents a notably different face. Soft-spoken and media-shy, he rarely courts attention and has never engaged in trash talk despite being called out by rivals — a deliberate choice to let his jiu-jitsu speak for itself. Those who know him describe a dry, wry humor that surfaces away from cameras; within B-Team Jiu-Jitsu's content, he often plays the composed straight man to Craig Jones's more theatrical antics, occasionally punctuating the dynamic with deadpan one-liners.

The loyalty he extends to his team is concrete, not rhetorical. His decision to forego earnings at CJI 2 so that competing athletes could receive larger payouts was a direct financial expression of that orientation. His relationship with his brother Gordon Ryan remains publicly respectful — he has praised Gordon as "a great asset to the sport" even as the professional separation that began in 2021 endures. Growing up in Gordon's spotlight was the condition of Nicky's entry into elite jiu-jitsu; his career since has been a sustained, quiet effort to be understood on his own terms.

The balance he navigates — between the Danaher-instilled obsession with detail and systems, B-Team's open and collegial culture, and his own emerging identity as both competitor and head coach — is, in many ways, the defining project of his career. He has said he enjoys coaching and competing equally, but that while healthy, he prioritizes being an athlete, recognizing that the competitive window is finite. What comes after that window, he has suggested, is a larger coaching and affiliation project: built on a technical foundation that took shape in the gyms of New Jersey, New York, and Austin, and that continues to develop every day he is on the mat.
