Key principles
- · Control the hip line by wedging your inside leg across the opponent's hip to prevent them from turning and relieving rotational pressure.
- · The heel must be extracted above the wrist line and cupped deeply in the blade of your wrist for maximum rotational leverage.
- · Torque is generated by rotating the heel toward the opponent's buttock while pinching your knees together to isolate the knee joint.
- · Maintain a strong back arch or hip extension to create opposing force against their leg while you rotate the heel.
- · Anticipate the boot (hiding the heel) by pommeling your grip under their toes and peeling the foot free before securing the cup.
Execution
- 1 From your controlling ashi garami position, secure inside leg positioning with your legs framing across the opponent's hip and thigh, pinching your knees tight around their trapped leg.
- 2 Clear any defensive grip or boot by pommeling your hand under their toes to expose the heel, then cup the heel deep into the blade of your wrist with your forearm crossing under the Achilles.
- 3 Clamp your elbow tight to your body and bring your second hand over to create a figure-four or Gable grip reinforcement around the heel.
- 4 Finish by rotating the heel inward (toward their glute) while simultaneously extending your hips and squeezing your knees, generating rotational force against the knee ligaments.
Common mistakes
- × Gripping too far down on the toes or foot instead of cupping the actual heel bone, which dissipates rotational force and allows the opponent to slip free.
- × Neglecting inside hip control with the legs, allowing the opponent to turn their knee in the direction of the torque and completely nullify the submission.
- × Cranking the finish with arms only instead of using hip extension and knee pinch together, resulting in weaker torque and easier escape.
