Key principles
- · The choking hand's wrist must be deep under the chin with the radial bone pressing into the trachea or carotid arteries.
- · Hips must be close to the opponent to prevent them from creating space and relieving pressure.
- · The finishing mechanic relies on curling the wrist upward toward your own chest while extending your back, not just squeezing the arms.
- · Closing guard or using leg control prevents the opponent from passing to the Von Flue side or rolling through to escape.
- · Anticipate the opponent tucking their chin by using a chin strap grip to peel the jaw up before sinking the choke.
Execution
- 1 Secure a front headlock position by wrapping your choking arm around the opponent's neck with your wrist blade seated deep under the chin.
- 2 Clasp your free hand over the choking fist or wrist in a palm-to-palm or Gable grip, keeping elbows tight to your body.
- 3 Pull the opponent's head tight against your chest and close your guard or establish hip-to-hip contact to eliminate space.
- 4 Finish by curling both wrists upward toward your sternum while arching your back and squeezing your elbows together, driving the forearm into the throat.
Common mistakes
- × Gripping too far around the neck rather than placing the wrist bone directly under the chin, resulting in a crank instead of a choke with poor finishing power.
- × Leaving hips distant from the opponent, which allows them to posture up, stack, or pass to side control and counter with a Von Flue choke.
- × Squeezing only with the arms without engaging the back arch and wrist curl, which burns grip strength quickly and fails to generate sufficient choking pressure.
