Geovanny "Geo" Martinez built his athletic foundation through breakdancing before stepping onto the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu mats. In 2011, Martinez began training at the 10th Planet gym in Vista, California, after accepting an offer to teach dance in exchange for free jiu-jitsu classes. This mutually beneficial arrangement allowed him to immerse himself in the art, and his natural athleticism accelerated his technical development.

Martinez's progression through the 10th Planet system was both rapid and impactful. Training under Eddie Bravo at 10th Planet, he advanced through the ranks with remarkable efficiency. Martinez earned his brown and black belts from Bravo, achieving black belt status in January 2014 after only three years of focused training. His performances in no-gi competition stood out for their dynamism and creativity, quickly establishing him as one of the most innovative American grapplers. Martinez's approach emphasized unorthodox entries, aggressive submission hunting, and fluid transitions—hallmarks of the 10th Planet system.

Martinez secured high-profile wins over opponents such as Jeff Glover and Fabbio Passos, demonstrating his ability to compete at the elite level. In his first year as a black belt, he remained undefeated across major events, including the Gracie Nationals and the ADCC Trials. At the 2015 ADCC World Championship, Martinez placed fourth, further cementing his reputation among the sport's elite. His matches at the Eddie Bravo Invitational, particularly his victory over Jeff Glover, are widely regarded as highlights of his competitive career, showcasing his technical creativity and composure under pressure.

On October 1, 2025, Martinez announced his retirement from high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition after a final appearance with Team 10th Planet at a Quintet event. In an interview during the 2024 Craig Jones Invitational, he cited age, injuries, and a desire to focus on running his gym and coaching students as primary reasons for stepping away from competition.
