Helena Crevar was born in January 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada, to Serbian parents, and her introduction to martial arts came before most children have found their first sport. At age three she enrolled in Kajukenbo — a Hawaiian hybrid combat art blending karate, judo, and kickboxing — and proved a natural from the start. By age eight she had earned her junior black belt in the discipline, a milestone that ran alongside an unusually broad sporting life encompassing ballroom dance, ballet, basketball, and swimming.

BJJ entered the picture at that same age, through circumstances that were almost accidental. The owner of a local gym where Crevar was taking strength and conditioning classes happened to be a jiu-jitsu enthusiast and suggested she give it a try. Her very first class was no-gi; she then spent roughly the next five years training primarily in the gi before eventually returning to no-gi competition. What set her apart from the beginning was not merely aptitude but competitive instinct. Crevar had declined to enter tournaments in every other sport she had played, yet just three months into BJJ training she went to her parents and asked to compete — a proactive request that said something definitive about how differently she related to grappling.

The results at her first tournament, at age nine, justified the confidence. Facing an older, higher-ranked opponent, she won by rear-naked choke — the same finishing technique that would headline some of her biggest professional victories years later.

Crevar trained under several coaches during her junior career, each contributing to a developing technical foundation. The most formative of those early relationships was with Hector Vasquez, who ran a well-regarded kids program in the Las Vegas area and was the coach who promoted her to blue belt. But the competitive horizon she was quietly building toward was far larger than local tournaments.

At age twelve, Crevar discovered the 2019 ADCC World Championships on FloGrappling and, in her own telling, set the event as a long-term goal on the spot. From around age thirteen she began self-studying John Danaher's instructional materials in earnest — dedicating roughly an hour before each training session to absorbing and testing the material on the mat. By 2022, at age fourteen or fifteen, she entered ADCC Trials and reached the quarterfinals, a strong result for an athlete of her age and rank. That same year she attended the 2022 ADCC World Championship in Las Vegas as a spectator alongside her parents, and watching the world's best compete in person further solidified what she was working toward.

The decisive step came at age fifteen, when Crevar — still a blue belt — relocated from Las Vegas to Austin, Texas to train full-time under John Danaher at his team, then called New Wave Jiu-Jitsu and since renamed Kingsway Jiu-Jitsu. She has described the move as the best decision she and her parents have made. Notably, Crevar had been joining adult training classes since around age ten, establishing early on a pattern of competing and training against more experienced, larger opponents — a habit that would define her preparation environment for years to come.

The training room at Kingsway Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most talent-dense environments in the sport, and Crevar has been immersed in it throughout the most formative stretch of her career. Her regular training partners include Gordon Ryan, Nicholas Meregali, and Oliver Taza — athletes who represent the upper ceiling of men's grappling globally. As of late 2026, approximately 99% of her training is with men, a dynamic she has maintained since joining adult classes around age ten and one she considers essential to her development.

John Danaher's methodology — built around positional training and a rigorous emphasis on defensive mastery — serves as the central organizing principle of her technical education at Kingsway. Crevar has spoken directly about how that defensive framework paid off under pressure: during her 2024 ADCC World Championship semifinal, she escaped a tight armbar in a moment she credits explicitly to Danaher's training approach. The culture at Kingsway prizes technical precision over physical dominance, which makes productive training across significant size and experience gaps not just possible but routine.

In the lead-up to 2026, Crevar substantially increased her focus on wrestling, working to add a more aggressive top-game entry to a style historically most comfortable initiating from guard. In competition she still tends to pull guard, but she has noted meaningful improvement in her takedown arsenal. Her 2026 training schedule runs a morning session followed by an afternoon session at the facility — a workload consistent with someone managing both elite competition preparation and continued technical growth.

Crevar's belt journey reflects both the pace of her development and the exceptionally high standards John Danaher applies to promotion decisions. Her blue belt came from Hector Vasquez in Las Vegas, earned during her junior training years before the move to Austin. Everything that followed came from Danaher directly.

In December 2024, at age seventeen, Crevar was promoted to brown belt — a recognition that arrived shortly after a standout stretch of results at No-Gi Worlds and the 2024 ADCC World Championship. Less than a year later, in June 2025 at age eighteen, Danaher promoted her to black belt, making her the first female athlete he has ever promoted to that rank. Given Danaher's well-documented reluctance to award black belts until he considers a practitioner fully prepared, the promotion carried particular weight across the broader grappling community.

Crevar's relationship with ADCC traces a clear arc — from a teenager watching highlight footage on FloGrappling to the youngest champion in the tournament's history.

Building Toward the Main Stage

Her first meaningful ADCC result came at the 2022 Trials, where she reached the quarterfinals as a fourteen or fifteen-year-old, a performance that announced her as a serious future contender. By 2024, she had qualified for the main event through the ADCC West Coast Trials — finishing first — and also reached the final of the East Coast Trials. At the 2024 ADCC World Championship, competing in the women's -65 kg division at age seventeen, Crevar won silver and became the youngest athlete to reach the ADCC podium in the tournament's history. Her run included a semifinal escape from a tight armbar — a moment she has since pointed to as direct evidence of what Danaher's defensive methodology produces under genuine championship pressure.

Historic Gold at 2026 ADCC

At the 2026 ADCC World Championship, Crevar moved up to the women's over 65 kg division. The reasoning, which she explained in a July 2026 interview with Claudio Martin for BJJ Doc, was straightforward: walking around at approximately 163 to 165 lbs in the six months leading into the event made the cut to 143 or 145 lbs a 15 to 20 pound reduction she described as uncomfortable and contrary to how she wants to compete. She acknowledged she might be among the lighter competitors in the heavier division and welcomed the challenge regardless.

The result was historic. Crevar won gold in the women's +65 kg division at age nineteen, finishing all three of her matches by submission and becoming the youngest ADCC champion in the tournament's history. In the lead-up to the event she had spoken publicly about Rafaela Guedes as the reigning champion and a formidable opponent, while expressing confidence in her own all-around game from both top and bottom positions. She also addressed the possibility of facing Gabi Garcia, recognizing Garcia as one of the most decorated female competitors in jiu-jitsu history and acknowledging that a matchup between them would represent a generational showdown the community was eager to see.

Alongside her ADCC career, Crevar has built an undefeated professional record across two of the sport's most prominent submission grappling formats.

At WNO 27 on April 18, 2025, she submitted Elisabeth Clay via rear-naked choke to claim the Who's Number One 145 lbs title, becoming the youngest WNO champion ever at eighteen years old. The finish was decisive and carried the same submission-hunting identity that defines her competitive approach across all contexts.

In Polaris Professional events, Crevar has gone 3–0, winning the Women's Lightweight (70 kg) title in 2024 and defending it successfully twice. She also signed an exclusive contract with Polaris in the United Kingdom, formalizing a professional relationship that has given her a consistent stage in European competition. Her May 2024 performance at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 7 added another chapter to that record, when she defeated France's leading grappler Aurélie Le Vern by decision — a result that demonstrated her ability to control seasoned black belts while still a teenager.

In July 2025, Crevar announced a professional grappling contract with ONE Championship, extending her competitive footprint into one of combat sports' most prominent global organizations. By mid-2026 she was preparing for her second appearance under the ONE banner — an open-weight match with a 175 lbs (79.4 kg) limit against Paige Ivette Clymer, the West Coast Trials winner, with both athletes also sharing a division at the 2026 ADCC World Championship.

The ONE Championship partnership runs parallel to her ADCC and submission grappling circuit campaigns rather than replacing them, reflecting a deliberate strategy of competing frequently across multiple high-profile platforms. As of late 2026, Crevar holds the pound-for-pound number one ranking in women's grappling, a position reflected across major grappling outlets and consistent with a professional record that includes no losses. In a FloGrappling appearance in late 2026 she outlined her goals plainly: compete often, maintain her ranking, continue finishing opponents by submission, and build her brand — ambitions that read as both straightforward and, given the trajectory so far, entirely credible.

Crevar's technical identity is built on submission hunting, and leg locks — a hallmark of the Kingsway Jiu-Jitsu system — are the techniques she cites as favorites. The approach is consistent across contexts: her 2026 ADCC World Championship gold medal run featured three consecutive submissions, and her biggest professional wins, including the WNO title and her Polaris performances, have ended the same way.

Her base in competition tends to be guard, though she deliberately expanded her wrestling in the year leading into 2026, adding a credible top-game threat to complement her ground work. The offensive dimension of her game is matched by an unusually developed defensive capability — a product of John Danaher's emphasis on positional survival and escape. Crevar has credited that framework directly for her ability to weather high-level attacks and reverse dangerous positions rather than merely avoid them. The combination of offensive finishing ability and defensive resilience is what defines her reputation as the most well-rounded female grappler competing today.

The environment that shaped her — training daily against Gordon Ryan, Nicholas Meregali, Oliver Taza, and other world-class men — has produced a comfort with physical and positional pressure that is difficult to manufacture any other way. Crevar has trained in that context since she was a child, and it shows in how she competes: composed under pressure, relentless in pursuit of the finish, and capable of rising to the occasion when the moments are largest.
