Kyle Boehm

Kyle Boehm was born on April 19, 1987, in Escondido, California, and built a formidable athletic identity long before he ever stepped onto a jiu-jitsu mat. His first sporting passion was rock climbing, which he began at age 9 and pursued to a national competitive level well into his early twenties. That same drive to conquer demanding physical challenges led him to summit Aconcagua in Argentina at just 17 — the highest peak outside of Asia — a feat that spoke volumes about his mental fortitude and physical discipline.

Boehm's competitive range extended well beyond the vertical during his school years. In middle school, he balanced five sports simultaneously: cross country, wrestling, basketball, track & field, and soccer. High school brought a sharper focus on football, basketball, and track, though he never abandoned climbing. This sustained exposure to structured competition across multiple disciplines gave him a well-rounded athletic foundation that would later accelerate his growth as a martial artist.

After graduating, Boehm attended Northern Arizona University, where he added rugby to his résumé and competed for two years before pivoting toward combat sports.

Boehm's transition from collegiate rugby to combat sports began with mixed martial arts, where he compiled an undefeated professional record of 3-0-0. While his MMA career showed clear promise, it was the pursuit of complete cage-fighting skills that steered him toward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In December 2014, he walked into 10th Planet Phoenix for the first time and began training under John Botello, a black belt under Eddie Bravo and the academy's head coach.

What began as a supplementary tool for MMA rapidly became his primary competitive focus. Boehm's lifelong athletic background translated seamlessly to grappling, and his natural aptitude drove quick progression through the local competition scene. By 2016, while still a colored belt, he had stepped into professional submission-only events — a format perfectly aligned with the 10th Planet system's no-gi, submission-first philosophy.

Boehm's colored belt career under John Botello at 10th Planet Phoenix was defined by consistent performance across multiple submission-only platforms. In 2017, he claimed gold at the Onnit Invitational 4 in the 205 lbs division, announcing his arrival as a legitimate force in professional no-gi competition. The following year brought a team tournament title at Subversiv, and 2019 proved to be the most productive stretch of his pre-black belt career — highlighted by another gold at Subversiv II and a standout showing at the BJJ Fanatics Brown Belt Grand Prix.

Those accomplishments, built on victories over respected names in the submission-only circuit, made his black belt promotion a matter of timing rather than readiness. In October 2019, John Botello awarded Boehm his black belt, marking both the culmination of five years of dedicated training and the opening of a new competitive chapter. The transition was immediate — Boehm captured the BJJ Fanatics Grand Prix title and the King of the Mats Invitational within the same year, confirming that his promotion had come at precisely the right moment.

Boehm's competitive identity is firmly rooted in submission-only and no-gi formats, a natural extension of the 10th Planet philosophy he has embraced since beginning his jiu-jitsu journey. His record across platforms such as Subversiv, Onnit Invitational, BJJ Fanatics Grand Prix, and King of the Mats reflects a competitor who performs consistently regardless of the promotion or ruleset — a quality that distinguishes him from athletes who peak within a single organization's framework.

Boehm competes in the over 80kg weight division and continues to seek out high-level opposition on the professional submission-only circuit. In 2024, he entered the Craig Jones Invitational in the over 80kg division, adding another significant platform to a career defined by a relentless appetite for meaningful competition.
