Nick Rodriguez was born on August 30, 1996, in Clayton, New Jersey — a state with one of the most deeply rooted wrestling cultures in the United States. He found his way to the mats at age 12, and the sport quickly became central to his identity. Competing for Clayton High School's wrestling team, Rodriguez developed into a legitimate contender, qualifying for the NJSIAA championships as a senior — a meaningful benchmark in a state where competition for those spots is fierce.

His high school performance earned him a place at Ferrum College's Division III wrestling program in Virginia. During his lone collegiate season, Rodriguez compiled a 34–7 record and placed fourth at the East Regionals, falling short of qualifying for the NCAA tournament. Rather than continue at the collegiate level, he pivoted — first toward a modeling career, then toward a discipline that would redefine his athletic trajectory entirely.

In June 2018, Rodriguez walked into South Jersey BJJ and began training under Jay Regalbuto. Regalbuto immediately identified the former wrestler's grappling potential and entered him in competition after just three weeks on the mats. The results were swift: Rodriguez won two pro-level tournaments within two months while remaining undefeated, validating Regalbuto's instinct.

With an ADCC USA East Coast Trials on the horizon, Rodriguez and Regalbuto began attending different training groups to sharpen his game. That search led them to Gordon Ryan, widely regarded as the best no-gi competitor in the world. Rodriguez's first private lesson with Ryan took place in October 2018, and Regalbuto's underlying plan — that Ryan would recognize Nicky Rod's potential and invite him into the Danaher Death Squad training room — proved correct. Rodriguez began visiting the DDS facility in New York twice a week in the lead-up to the Trials.

Roughly six months into his jiu-jitsu journey, Rodriguez took bronze at the 2018 ADCC US East Coast Trials, with Regalbuto promoting him to blue belt on the podium. A few months later, Rodriguez returned at the ADCC US West Coast Trials in California and earned his spot at the World Championships. At the 2019 ADCC World Championships, competing against world-class black belts despite holding only a purple belt, Rodriguez tore through the +99 kg bracket and reached the final — where he fell to Kaynan Duarte — claiming a silver medal that stunned the grappling world. Regalbuto promoted him to purple belt on the podium, marking one of the most remarkable single-event ascents in the sport's recent history.

The 2019 ADCC World Championships silver medal opened a new chapter. Rodriguez began training full-time under John Danaher in New York, immersing himself in the systematic, detail-oriented methodology that had made the Danaher Death Squad the most dominant force in competitive no-gi grappling. When John Danaher relocated his operations to Puerto Rico, Rodriguez moved with the team, prioritizing development over convenience.

The DDS environment proved transformative for a competitor who had entered jiu-jitsu as a raw wrestler. Training daily alongside specialists in leg locks and back attacks, Rodriguez built a submission game to complement the explosive double-leg takedowns and slam passes that had already made him dangerous. The technical depth he accumulated during these years — particularly in heel hooks and back control sequences — would become a defining feature of every subsequent major performance.

When the Danaher Death Squad fractured in 2021, Rodriguez faced a defining choice. Rather than follow John Danaher to his new project, Rodriguez chose an independent path, co-founding B-Team Jiu-Jitsu in Austin alongside Craig Jones, Nicky Ryan, and Ethan Crelinsten. The new team was conceived as a deliberate departure from the rigid, hierarchical culture of the DDS — a more open, creative environment where elite training and genuine enjoyment of the sport could coexist.

At B-Team, Rodriguez leads by example. He spearheads the team's wrestling program, mentoring newer members on takedown mechanics and conditioning in ways that reflect his competitive background. His presence helped shape a "train hard, have fun" ethos that has attracted top talent from across the grappling world to visit and cross-train. The decision to forge an independent path rather than attach himself to an established hierarchy allowed Rodriguez to build his personal brand and gym equity while continuing to compete at the sport's highest level — a balance few elite grapplers manage effectively.

On December 23, 2023, Craig Jones promoted Rodriguez to black belt — a milestone that arrived with Rodriguez already holding two ADCC silver medals and a string of dominant performances.

At the 2022 ADCC World Championships, Rodriguez entered the +99 kg division as a last-minute replacement and cut through the bracket to reach the final once again. There he faced Gordon Ryan, who submitted him via heel hook at the 2:15 mark, earning Rodriguez his second consecutive +99 kg silver medal. Despite the loss, the performance illustrated how dramatically his technical game had evolved since their first meeting.

Later in 2022, at the UFC Fight Pass Invitational 3, Rodriguez came even closer to ending Ryan's dominance — nearly catching him in a tight toe hold, popping Ryan's ankle and forcing an overtime escape-win. The contrast with their 2019 meeting, which Ryan had won without serious difficulty, underscored the depth of Rodriguez's growth as a submission grappler.

The upward trajectory continued into 2023. Rodriguez won the ADCC North American Trials without being scored on across any of his matches — a display of complete dominance that reinforced his standing among the world's elite heavyweights. His blend of wrestling explosiveness, raw physical strength, and refined submission grappling had made him one of the most challenging matchups in the sport at any weight.

The competitive rivalry between Rodriguez and Gordon Ryan spilled into something far more public and personal following their 2022 encounters. Ryan publicly accused Rodriguez of greasing — applying lotion or baby oil before matches to reduce grippability. Ryan's specific claim: "He definitely was lotioned… He was so slippery." The accusation landed hard in a sport where physical contact and grip control are fundamental, dominating grappling media throughout late 2022 and into 2023.

Rodriguez denied the allegation without equivocation and countered by pointing to Ryan's documented history with performance-enhancing drugs, calling out the hypocrisy of a known PED user raising ethics concerns about an opponent. The exchange escalated: Rodriguez submitted to a polygraph test on a podcast to assert he had not greased, while Ryan responded with videos insinuating guilt. Rodriguez simultaneously challenged Ryan to submit to regular PED testing — a challenge Ryan did not accept in kind.

Far from damaging Rodriguez's reputation, the feud amplified his profile. His willingness to undergo a polygraph, his openness to oversight, and his consistent framing of himself as a clean competitor relying on hard work and natural talent rallied a substantial portion of the grappling community to his side. The personal relationship between the two men soured, but the rivalry built enormous anticipation for future meetings and cemented Rodriguez's identity as the sport's most prominent challenger to Ryan's dominance.

Rodriguez's public identity as a clean competitor has evolved into deliberate, self-aware branding. His Instagram bio reads: "Professional Jiu Jitsu is the most anabolic sport in the world. Everyone I compete against is abusing steroids" — a line that functions as both a joke and a pointed commentary. B-Team released a video in which its members rated grapplers on a "natty or not" scale, with Rodriguez positioned as the poster boy for the natural lifestyle. His hashtag "#naturalgorilla" became a recognizable marker across social media, attracting supplement companies and health brands whose partnerships align with the clean-sport message he projects.

The branding is backed by substantive advocacy. At the UFC BJJ 13 post-match press conference in October 2026, Rodriguez stated publicly that he had heard rumors of full UFC BJJ PED testing implementation in 2027 and expressed genuine enthusiasm: "I also hear rumors that UFC might be fully PED testing in 2027, and that is true. I'm very excited for that." He drew direct comparisons to the UFC's unannounced early-morning testing protocols, acknowledging that 7 a.m. sample collections are inconvenient but ultimately worthwhile to ensure the sport remains clean.

When discussing why organizations have historically delayed robust testing, Rodriguez identified two primary factors: the financial cost of testing programs and the prevalence of PED use within the athlete pool itself, suggesting that a meaningful number of high-level competitors might be unable to continue if required to stop. His deepest stated concern, however, is for younger practitioners — athletes aged five, ten, or fifteen — who join gyms with reputations for PED culture and may feel implicit pressure to use drugs to achieve success. He has advised young athletes to choose training environments where the majority of professional competitors are not abusing PEDs.

For skeptics who question how Rodriguez maintains his physical profile naturally, he has offered a consistent answer: approximately 15 years of dedicated weight training, disciplined nutrition, and favorable genetics. He has also referenced an assessment by Derek of the YouTube channel More Plates More Dates, who conducted a random PED test on Rodriguez several years prior to 2026 and found no evidence of drug use — a result Rodriguez cites as independent corroboration of what he has maintained throughout his career.

In December 2025, the Rodriguez–Ryan feud found a new arena when Gordon Ryan accused Rodriguez of plagiarizing one of his well-known framings about trained grapplers versus untrained opponents. Ryan pointed to a November 2023 comment he had made during a conversation with illusionist Chris Angel: "Training with a person who has never done any martial arts or grappled in their life is literally like playing with a child, no matter what size they are." He then contrasted that with Rodriguez's remarks on the Coach Em Up podcast in 2025: "If you train jiu-jitsu consistently for like 2 years and you get in a fight with a regular human being that has never trained, it's like playing with a baby. I'm not even exaggerating. You can do whatever you want to them."

Ryan shared social media screenshots juxtaposing the two statements and repeatedly referred to Rodriguez as "Nicky Fraud." The jiu-jitsu community's reaction was divided. Some viewed the similarity as coincidental — the underlying sentiment about trained versus untrained individuals is a common observation in martial arts discourse dating back to the early UFC era. Others found the near-identical phrasing difficult to dismiss as independent expression.

Rodriguez accompanied his remarks with additional commentary about the practical and legal consequences of physical confrontations, including a bouncer-related incident that resulted in a lawsuit settled after the other party admitted to headbutting him. "It's like we're in court for like a year and then we settled for whatever because he admitted to headbutting me, right? It's like people are just fragile, literally just from a push, you know? So it's not worth it." The episode extended the long-running social media dynamic between the two former teammates into yet another public dispute.

The Craig Jones Invitational 2024 represented the single largest financial achievement of Rodriguez's career to that point. Competing in the +80 kg weight class, he won the division and claimed the $1 million grand prize — a sum he has described as transformative in how he thinks about his career and life outside competition.

In March 2025, Rodriguez revealed that he had considered entering the ADCC 2024 absolute division, a detail that illustrated the confidence the victory had generated. He also moved quickly to leverage the moment: he placed his prize money on a bet match against Gordon Ryan, consistent with the combative dynamic that has defined their relationship since 2022.

The win also shaped his public commentary on athlete health and financial decision-making. Rodriguez has stated explicitly that he will not transition to MMA despite fan interest, summarizing his reasoning with characteristic directness: "I'm a millionaire with no CTE." At the UFC BJJ 13 post-match press conference in October 2026, he claimed the Craig Jones Invitational 2024 victory made him "the first grappler to ever win a million dollars in competition" — a distinction he would subsequently double by claiming a second million-dollar prize at CJI 2.

The Craig Jones Invitational 2 took place August 30–31, 2025, in Las Vegas, but Rodriguez's participation was far from guaranteed in the days leading up to the event. During event week, he developed a severe staph infection on his knee — a serious medical situation that threatened to sideline him entirely.

Upon landing in Las Vegas, coaches Nicky Ryan and Damien Anderson sent him directly to the hospital, where he spent approximately six hours receiving intravenous antibiotics. The team made contingency arrangements, with Roberto Jimenez identified as a potential replacement if Rodriguez could not compete. By mid-week, Rodriguez had been unable to walk and was genuinely uncertain whether he would be cleared in time. After approximately 48 hours on antibiotics, his condition stabilized enough to make competing a realistic option.

He chose to compete. Rodriguez contributed to B-Team's overall victory at CJI 2, with the team claiming the $1,000,000 team prize. In his post-event remarks, he publicly thanked Craig Jones and Seth Belisle for their support throughout the ordeal — an acknowledgment that reflected the team-oriented character of B-Team even amid an individually grueling experience.

As of March 1, 2026, UFC BJJ announced the signing of Rodriguez, with a debut scheduled for March 12, 2026, on a card that also featured Ana Rodriguez against Jasmine Rocha and Manuel Ribamar against Caio Vinicius. On the Simple Man Podcast in early March 2026, Rodriguez clarified that the initial deal was a one-match contract with no exclusivity attached. The booking came together quickly — approximately two and a half to three weeks — after a spot opened on an upcoming card while he was already in negotiations with UFC. As he described it: "I think somebody dropped out of their card and I was like in the middle of negotiating with UFC. They're like, 'You just want to hop on this one?' I was like, 'Yeah.'"

Rodriguez expressed enthusiasm for the three five-minute rounds format, describing it as well-suited to his style: "I like the bowl. It's hard to anti-jiu. For me in matches, the more jist happens, the better." His UFC BJJ debut against Elder Cruz on March 12, 2026, ended in a majority draw — a result that left the door open for further competition under the promotion's banner.

The financial context of the signing drew considerable discussion. Rodriguez had earned $1 million at the Craig Jones Invitational 2024 and a further $1 million at the Craig Jones Invitational 2, placing him in a different earnings category than UFC BJJ's reported pay structure — approximately $12,000 per appearance at the base level, with top-tier exclusive athletes reportedly earning up to $150,000 annually across all four yearly cards, including submission bonuses. Speculation within the grappling community centered on the possibility that Rodriguez accepted reduced immediate compensation in anticipation of a more lucrative exclusive agreement.

The signing carried additional complexity given UFC BJJ's announced policy — communicated by Claudia Gadelha as of March 1, 2026 — that exclusive roster members would be prohibited from competing at ADCC beginning in 2027. For Rodriguez, that restriction would likely require navigating the ADCC Trials process rather than receiving a direct invitation, adding layers to any future long-term arrangement with the promotion.

Rodriguez returned to UFC BJJ competition on October 29, 2026, at UFC BJJ 13, where he defeated Nata Tenca. At the post-match press conference, he articulated his motivations for pursuing the UFC BJJ belt with characteristic transparency: "I think the UFC BJJ belt is great, but I am looking forward to the substantial checks I'll be cashing. That is what's really on my mind." Beyond the financial dimension, he expressed a belief that holding the belt would provide a platform to grow the sport and pointed to the format's potential to attract well-known mixed martial artists who want to compete in a grappling context without committing to a full fight.

On the Simple Man Podcast in early March 2026, Rodriguez joined Ethan Crelinsten and physical therapist Dr. Danny Spalding for a conversation spanning some of the most substantive questions facing competitive jiu-jitsu. Rodriguez's central assertion — "there's not a lot of superior athletes in the sport" — framed a broader discussion about why elite athletic profiles tend to gravitate toward other disciplines. Crelinsten agreed, characterizing jiu-jitsu as featuring "some of the least athletic athletes" among competitive sports, while Dr. Spalding framed the matter as one of skill dominance: "It's such a skill dominance. It's all about brain and you can overcome your lack of athleticism."

Rodriguez identified match duration as a critical variable in how athleticism translates to outcomes: "In a six-minute match the athletic guy is going to do better as opposed to a 15 or a 30-minute match." Applied to ADCC, where finals can extend deep into overtime, the implication is that grappling-specific conditioning and technical precision tend to erode raw athletic advantages over time.

The financial dimension of the athletic talent gap drew pointed commentary. Former UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier noted in early March 2026 that top collegiate wrestlers who once earned approximately $750 to $1,000 per month can now command $100,000 to $400,000 annually in wrestling — a development that reduces the incentive to transition into jiu-jitsu or MMA. Jiu-jitsu briefly eclipsed MMA pay during the Craig Jones Invitational 2024 and to a lesser extent the Craig Jones Invitational 2, but that dynamic did not establish itself as a durable trend, with grapplers seeking UFC BJJ contracts in the range of $12,000 to show and $12,000 to win as of early 2026.

The conversation also touched on ADCC's trajectory. Damien Andersen suggested the organization may have reached a relative peak. Rodriguez was direct in criticizing the decision to hold the next ADCC in Poland: "How can you not do it in the US, man? Like, are you kidding me? In Vegas, everyone will go to Vegas." Nicky Ryan raised the concern that UFC BJJ exclusivity contracts could restrict ADCC's available talent pool, while acknowledging that ADCC's increased prize money represented "definitely a step in the right direction." As of the podcast's recording in early March 2026, Rodriguez noted that the next Craig Jones Invitational had generated almost no public information beyond the involvement of Craig Jones and Dillon Danis — no dates, no prize money, and no confirmed format.

Rodriguez built his early competitive reputation on a foundation of explosive double-leg takedowns and powerful slam passes — tools refined through years of wrestling before he ever set foot in a jiu-jitsu gym. That wrestling base gave him an immediate structural advantage: he could dictate where matches took place and impose a physical tempo that purely BJJ-developed opponents struggled to manage.

What has made Rodriguez genuinely dangerous at the elite level is the submission game he has layered on top of that foundation. Training alongside leg lock specialists during his time with the Danaher Death Squad and continuing that development at B-Team, he built heel hooks and back attacks into central weapons rather than peripheral options. The near-submission of Gordon Ryan at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 3 in 2022 — a tight toe hold that popped Ryan's ankle — stands as perhaps the most visible evidence of how far that game had developed.

At B-Team, Rodriguez spearheads the wrestling program, translating his competitive experience into mentorship for teammates whose backgrounds are more purely BJJ-oriented. His philosophy in competition centers on sustained offensive pressure: he has stated explicitly that he intends to "keep my foot on the gas" throughout matches, maintaining a high pace without easing off to protect a lead. He describes his ideal competitive expression as "high pace, aggressive, offensive" — a style that, as match time extends, becomes increasingly difficult for any opponent to manage.

Rodriguez has also reflected on the broader influence of his wrestling-centric approach, expressing a belief that his success has encouraged athletes from wrestling backgrounds to explore jiu-jitsu competitively — a contribution to the sport's talent pipeline that extends well beyond his own results on the mat.
