Luiz Panza was born on February 2, 1990, on the north side of São Paulo, Brazil, and grew up in a middle-class neighborhood. An energetic child from the start, his family introduced him to martial arts at age 7, beginning with Kung Fu before he transitioned to Shotokan Karate — a discipline he practiced for many years and in which he eventually earned a black belt.

As a teenager, Panza dreamed of competing in MMA, but gym membership fees were out of reach. Determined to find a way, he saved birthday and Christmas money over several years until, around age 16, he had enough to walk into the Lotus academy. Rather than enroll in formal classes, he negotiated something more unconventional: permission to attend only the MMA sparring sessions and spar directly with the gym's fighters — an arrangement the administration accepted.

That MMA chapter came to an abrupt end after a street altercation in which Panza defended his girlfriend. The severity of the incident convinced his mother that MMA was making her son dangerously aggressive, and she forbade him from continuing. The turning point came through his best friend, Felipe Marques, who trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and helped broker a compromise: together, the two persuaded Mrs. Panza to allow Luiz to try Jiu-Jitsu instead. In 2007, Panza stepped onto the mats for the first time under coach Edilberto da Ponte at the A.O.A. team, where he would earn both his blue and purple belts.

Before committing fully to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Luiz Panza was navigating a life with several financially secure paths open to him. An emerging model with an active career, he was simultaneously finishing a university degree and working at a bank — a combination that offered professional stability most athletes his age could only imagine. The decision to walk away from all of it was deliberate and unambiguous: in 2013, Panza chose to turn professional in BJJ, trading the catwalk and the bank floor for a life defined by competition and the mats. That willingness to abandon comfort in favor of passion would become a defining theme in how he approached the sport.

Panza trained under Edilberto da Ponte at the A.O.A. team through his blue and purple belt years, building a technical foundation that would serve him throughout his career. Seeking a more competitive environment at purple belt, he transferred to Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu, one of the top teams in São Paulo. Under the guidance of Marco Barbosa, he received both his brown belt and, on December 17, 2012, his black belt.

His first year competing as a black belt served as immediate validation. Results came quickly and consistently, establishing Panza as a serious presence among the sport's elite. In 2014, he relocated to the United States and joined Checkmat under Leonardo Vieira — known as Leozinho — at the Checkmat HQ academy, a partnership that deepened his development and extended his competitive success onto the international stage.

Early Black Belt Dominance

From the moment Panza began competing at the black belt level, medals at the sport's most prestigious events followed in rapid succession. The year 2013 served as a statement: he won the IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship in both the weight and absolute divisions, claimed double gold at the CBJJ Brazilian No-Gi Nationals, and added a third-place finish at both the IBJJF World Championship absolute and the IBJJF Brazilian Nationals. The following year, he added Pan Championship gold in the gi, confirming that his game translated seamlessly across rulesets and formats.

Peak Years and International Titles

2016 represented the peak of his IBJJF competitive output. That year, Panza captured gold at the 2016 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship — the most prestigious no-gi title in the sport — alongside Pan Championship gold, a UAEJJF Grand Slam Los Angeles title, and an IBJJF LA BJJ Pro victory. In 2017, he added the ACBJJ Berkut Grand Prix 95kg title and a third-place finish at the IBJJF World Championship absolute. He continued competing at a high level into 2020, earning a silver medal at the IBJJF Pan Championship — a result that spoke to the remarkable longevity of his career. Throughout his competitive run, Panza has competed in the Super Pesado division, up to 100kg/223lbs.

No technique is more closely associated with Luiz Panza than the straight ankle lock from the 50/50 guard. The submission accounts for a substantial share of his victories across his competitive career and became the defining signature of his approach to grappling. His command of leg entanglements from the 50/50 position made him a consistent finishing threat against opponents who might otherwise feel comfortable exchanging points or grinding out a decision.

Panza's specialization placed him among the early elite-level practitioners of leg lock systems at a time when the broader grappling community was only beginning to fully appreciate their effectiveness. His success with the technique at major IBJJF and international events helped legitimize the approach within both gi and no-gi competition, establishing him as a pioneer of the modern leg lock era.

The Injury

The most difficult chapter of Luiz Panza's career came not from a loss on the scoreboard, but from an injury that threatened to end his competitive life entirely. During an early-round match at the 2015 Jiu-Jitsu World Pro Championship in Abu Dhabi, opponent Felipe Pena applied what appeared to be a straightforward toehold. Witnesses reported hearing an audible snap throughout the arena. Panza was ahead on points with only seconds remaining and, as he later described, did not feel in immediate danger — he believed he would have tapped had he sensed the threat — but the referee stopped the match. The severity only registered when Panza looked down and saw his foot pointing in an unintended direction.

Aftermath and Hospitalization

As documented in a September 2015 profile in Jiu Jitsu Magazine, the hours that followed were defined by pain, fear, and logistical chaos. Taken to the hospital around 10 am, Panza called his mother, his wife Andrea, and close friends to inform and reassure them. Hospital capacity constraints forced him to be transferred between facilities; only at a third hospital did he finally receive an X-ray. Even on morphine, he was required to keep his leg still while awaiting a physician's assessment. Marcus Almeida — known as Buchecha, his teammate and close friend — came to the hospital to offer comfort. Felipe Pena, who had won the match by referee stoppage, was visibly shaken by what had unfolded. A friend, Philippe Pomaski, a purple belt from Switzerland, stayed by Panza's side throughout the entire day — postponing his own scheduled match to do so — before finally returning to his hotel around 8 pm.

Panza spent the night alone in the hospital without internet or television, and could not be given sleep medication because surgery was scheduled for the following morning. In the Jiu Jitsu Magazine profile, he described it as the worst night of his life. The next morning, surgeons reconstructed both his tibia and fibula. He remained in Abu Dhabi for approximately a week to recover before returning to California.

Rehabilitation and Return

Back in the United States, Panza approached rehabilitation with the same intensity he brought to competition. He began upper-body strength work immediately while his leg was in the calcification phase, and engaged in controlled rehabilitation for his leg muscles throughout the recovery process. His approach drew from a model similar to that used by former UFC champion Anderson Silva — with whom he shared the same physical therapist — and included consistent training at UTC CrossFit in Signal Hill, California. As of September 2015, he was also teaching Jiu-Jitsu at Blackhouse Redondo Beach and was targeting a return to competition at the No-Gi Worlds in November 2015 — a timeline that, given the nature of the injury, represented a remarkable commitment to the sport.

On May 28, 2021, Luiz Panza was scheduled to face Gordon Ryan in the main event of Who's Number One (WNO). Ryan withdrew from the bout due to Gastroparesis, and Craig Jones stepped in as a replacement, keeping Panza in the headline matchup. The event stood as one of Panza's highest-profile appearances on the modern submission grappling stage and underscored his standing as a recognized competitor at the elite level of no-gi grappling during the WNO era.

Following the birth of his first child in 2018, Luiz Panza shifted the center of gravity in his professional life toward instruction and academy ownership. In 2019, he opened Academia Panza Jiu-Jitsu — also operating as Checkmat Rolling Hills — in Rolling Hills, California, maintaining his long-standing affiliation with Checkmat while building an institution of his own. The academy gave him a platform to pass on the technical foundation he developed over nearly two decades on the mats.

The transition had precedent in his own career. As early as September 2015, Panza was teaching at Blackhouse Redondo Beach while still competing at the highest levels. Opening his own gym followed a path common among elite Brazilian competitors who establish roots in the United States — a natural evolution from athlete to coach, from representing a team to building one.
