Jacob "J-Rod" Rodriguez was born in February 2002 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in Clayton, New Jersey, in a household where athletics were woven into everyday life. Football served as his first organized sport, but wrestling quickly claimed his competitive identity. Rodriguez first stepped onto the mats around ages six or seven, and as he and his older brother Nick Rodriguez grew into their teenage years, the sport became the shared pursuit both invested in most seriously.

Driven to develop beyond what his school program offered, Rodriguez joined a club wrestling team during middle school to accumulate additional competitive experience. That investment paid measurable dividends—by his junior year at Clayton High School, he had secured first place at the district level and second place at the regional championship. He carried that momentum through the remainder of his scholastic career, finishing with a record of 136 wins and 19 losses. That foundation of high-volume competitive experience would later prove directly transferable to elite grappling.

As Rodriguez neared the end of his high school wrestling career, Nick Rodriguez was already establishing himself in submission grappling. Watching his older brother break through in jiu-jitsu sparked Jacob's own interest in the discipline, and in September 2020—shortly after finishing high school—he began training under coach Jay Regalbuto at Studio 84 in New Jersey. Within two months, he entered his first no-gi competition at a local tournament in November 2020, an unusually fast transition into organized grappling.

His progression from that point was remarkable even by the standards of high-level wrestlers entering jiu-jitsu. Training twice per day, Rodriguez earned his blue belt in just seven months. By mid-2021, he relocated to Austin, Texas, to train full-time with his brother at the newly formed B-Team Jiu-Jitsu—an environment built around innovative, aggressive no-gi grappling that accelerated his development further.

In 2022, Rodriguez won the ADCC West Coast Trials, qualifying him for the world championships. Two years later, at ADCC 2024, he reached the final of his weight division and captured a silver medal—one of the most significant results in submission grappling. Following that performance, Nick Rodriguez promoted his younger brother to brown belt, a recognition of how far Jacob had traveled in an exceptionally compressed timeframe.

Rodriguez's approach to no-gi grappling bears the clear imprint of his wrestling background. His style centers on athleticism, physical pressure, and top control—attributes sharpened across more than a decade on the wrestling mat and refined through training at B-Team Jiu-Jitsu alongside some of the sport's most innovative practitioners.

What distinguishes Rodriguez within the submission grappling landscape, however, is his adoption of the Buggy Choke as a signature weapon. An unorthodox submission rarely deployed at elite levels, the buggy choke became closely associated with Rodriguez as he demonstrated its viability against high-level competition. His willingness to reach for unconventional submissions from scramble positions reflects both the creativity of his training environment and the comfort with unusual positions that wrestling instills. Rodriguez has publicly stated that he will not use performance-enhancing drugs while competing in BJJ, a commitment he has made a consistent part of his competitive identity.

In May 2025, B-Team Jiu-Jitsu leadership banned Rodriguez from the gym after discovering that he had kept screenshots of female teammates' public Instagram content saved alongside adult material on his phone. The incident involved at least two female team members, including competitor Ally Wolski, and prompted immediate action from the organization.

Former B-Team member Payton Leiser publicly disputed Rodriguez's characterization of events and shared additional details about troubling behavior during their relationship. Rodriguez acknowledged publicly that his conduct had been invasive, inappropriate, and unhealthy, and clarified that circulating rumors involving AI-generated content or hidden cameras were false. Reporting at the time indicated there were additional allegations beyond what Rodriguez addressed in his public statements.

In the months that followed, Rodriguez attributed the situation to adult content he had been consuming and stated that he sought therapy and leaned on his faith as he worked toward personal growth. In August 2025, on the Jits and Giggles podcast, he acknowledged that he could not train at any worthwhile gym in Austin. His time away from competition extended to two or three months of near-complete absence from the mats before he relocated to East Austin Jiu-Jitsu for a period of training.

The organizational landscape at Rodriguez's former gym shifted substantially in the second half of 2025. In July 2025, Craig Jones announced his departure from B-Team Jiu-Jitsu, citing the difficulty of managing the gym remotely. Seth Belisle departed thereafter, and management of the academy transitioned to Nicky Ryan and Damien Anderson. The gym subsequently rebranded as Simple Man Martial Arts (SMMA), positioning itself around a more family-oriented training culture.

On December 28, 2025, coach Damien Anderson stated publicly that Rodriguez was not a member of SMMA, did not participate in public classes or member hours, and that any limited facility use occurred outside of public hours. Anderson also indicated that the gym maintained a zero-tolerance policy regarding conduct and member safety.

In March 2026, Rodriguez posted footage from what appeared to be a gym security camera, showing himself executing a throw with a training partner. When followers asked where the footage had been filmed, he claimed it was old material. The video, however, carried a timestamp watermark reading December 10, 2025—a date that fell after the gym had completed its rebrand from B-Team to Simple Man Martial Arts. The footage also contained visible identifying details, including a foot wiper bearing the SMMA logo at the entrance and an SMMA flag on the wall, directly contradicting the claim that the recording predated his removal from the organization.

Sources as of March 2026 further reported that Rodriguez had appeared at morning sessions at SMMA, creating a tension between the gym's official public stance and reported activity at the facility. Around the same period, in approximately early to mid-March 2026, Rodriguez was spotted cornering his brother Nick Rodriguez at a UFC BJJ event.
