About this video
Overcoming the knee shield in half guard involves a classic weave through to control their pants while simultaneously reaching for their head. Instead of grabbing the collar, secure the back of the head for a consistent grip in both Gi and No-Gi scenarios. This ensures a tight shoulder-to-chest connection.
- Apply pressure with the chest on the opponent's knee, reach for their head, and pivot on the free leg's hip.
- Release the leg weave and pull the arms to achieve an underhook, clasping the hands together to maintain tightness.
- Turn the head in the opposite direction and dig for a second underhook, keeping the head lower than the opponent's and flaring their elbows out.
- Place the forehead where the opponent's shoulder meets their chest, keeping the head down and grip tight on their shoulders.
- Use the free leg to hook behind the opponent's knee, drawing their leg away to create a knee bar-like pressure.
- While maintaining pressure, drop to the hip and scrape the trapped leg over the opponent's leg to free it.
- Once the leg is free, flatten out, turn to the hip, and transition to side control.
By executing this sequence, you create a sense of danger for the opponent, distracting them from controlling your trapped leg, and allowing you to pass the half guard effectively.
