About this video
Executing a calf cutter from the bottom half guard begins with maintaining a strong frame to keep the opponent's weight off. When the opponent transitions to a top Reverse De La Riva guard, control of their weight is compromised. To counter, transition to a half butterfly guard by inserting the top leg underneath the opponent's knee while keeping the bottom hook active and tight.
- Push the opponent slightly away to create space for the arm corresponding to the butterfly hook to pummel in front of their chest.
- Begin to lift as if attempting a backward sweep, causing the opponent to post on their free knee.
- Underhook their posted leg and shoot the butterfly hook leg all the way through underneath.
- Secure a figure-four lock with the legs and hug the opponent's leg at the hip.
- Stretch the legs away from the opponent to apply pressure for the calf slicer submission.
It's important to use the knee shield effectively to manage distance and create the necessary space for the transition. Once the opponent reacts to the lifting pressure, the underhook and leg positioning are critical to successfully lock in and finish the calf cutter.
